here's what I should ask: if I decide to give this back to my family and say, "Here. Look how great linux is!" which distro? Has anyone tried something similar and achieved good results with said family member?

@pyre35 My "can barely turn on the PC" mom uses Linux Mint without constantly asking me for help. So I'd go for that one lol

@pyre35 4gb ram is not that limited...I think you really should be able to run any current distro on that. Though the one I might really suggest right now is the new tromjaro xfce. @trom

@pyre35 @telroy Any decent distro with a not too heavily modified DE is probably just fine (Gnome, KDE, XFCE, MATE, etc..).not to forget Elementary OS.

@pyre35 I really like void linux. Also antix is a lightweight distro that is based off of debian. You can also try q4os or the openbox based distro BunsenLabs.

@jinxd @telroy do you pay for each update in Elementary OS? I know it is pay what you want, but just didn't know if that extended to updates... I don't want to pay for a distro if I give this back to a family member only to have them pay each time they udpate...

@jinxd @telroy I have no problem paying some (I know some people on here do), I just don't want my family members to feel "pressured" every 6-12 months...

@pyre35 @telroy I get that they want / need money. Seems a tad pushy like you said (first thing on the landing page). Probably generates more revenue than just some donation link :D

@pyre35 If you haven’t tried it before, I’d recommend Solus, which is great on laptops.
