Linus should take this opportunity to trash on the companies who refuse to give good support to Linux, at least after the Steam Deck releases. Yes today they might still be justified due to the small userbase, but not for long

Oh man, now talking about how filesystems are something most young people are unaware of. How many kids have actually seen a physical file archive?

@joeligj12 I implemented Git at work. Smart people here, buy they call me and tell me they got an "error". Basically they have altered a file someone else has. They see "error" and they just stop. I've had to train them to rethink what that means

@joeligj12 probably as few as the kids nowadays who actually know it's a floppy disk and not "the save icon".

@joeligj12 my 11-year old was learning about files/directory trees at school this week. I think the original comment was a bit of a throwaway, and probably not even substantiated. I do see a lot of undergrads and PhD students who don't know "how to computer." but it's mostly due to lack of effort. I'm sure they have been taught at some point but prefer spoon feeding, which is a more serious generational issue

@joeligj12 I've never thought of this, but it's true! A powerful search feature is very important in this day and age. What distro/DE include the best search function do you think?🤔

@simon yes, but your son has a father with Tux in their username /sSeriously tho, I think most old computer users would have understood a file explorer program as soon as they saw it's icon. "Hey look, that program looks like the archive in the office" It's not that they cannot learn, is just that many of the practices of computing are not what kids today have seen.People now drag and drop pics from chrome to word, and it magically appears, who needs to know it's actual location?

@joeligj12 I think that the good ones will learn and understand, and the less good won't. And perhaps when the traditional paradigms were around, only the good ones learned then too. My friend recently called me because he had tried backing up music to external storage and ended up moving his entire music collection to the desktop folder. He was about to delete it to "make the mess go away". Luckily I was able to figure out and help.
