They used to be useful back in the 90’s when they indexed more than the same three sites for every single search, but now you can expect never to find new information on these engines, which have all been compromised by shills and spam anyway. My website: https://lukesmith.xyzGet all my videos off YouTube: https://videos.lukesmith.xyzor Odysee: https://odysee.com/$/invite/@Luke:7Please donate: https://donate.lukesmith.xyzOR affiliate links to things l use:https://www.vultr.com/?ref=8384069-6G Get a VPS and host a website or server for anything else.https://www.epik.com/?affid=we2ro7sa6 Get a cheap and reliable domain name with Epik.

I've made the decision not to care about search engine optimization on my website, I know that my site will never really be put in front of other sites so why bother? Search engine optimization basically boils down to writing for a machine rather than a real person, nobody wants to read stuff written for a machine and I don't want to write for one. All search engines are these days are [confirmation bias generators](https://jacobwsmith.xyz/stories/confirmation_bias.html) and people who want to make quality websites should just [ignore them.](https://jacobwsmith.xyz/stories/seo.html)

Search engines always gives me movie results when searching for words. Same for images. I dont want want hollywood shit, I want results related to the actual word im searching for. There is a movie for every word out there so it messes up search results. When im searching for a person to see videos they have posted or to learn more about them, search engines just give me "news articles" (read: opinions) why the person is literally hitler and why I should hate them. I dont care, thats not why I searched for them! I can make up my own mind!Search engines are also totally useless for programming stuff these days. They give totally unrelated reddit results. Github search is also broken so I cant even search for code. The only choice I really have is to clone git repositories and grep through them to read the source code. I wish somebody could make a search engine that is actually useful, not just consooming/brainwashing shit.

I've recently stumbled upon several websites which contain real gems, they are like the early websites on the Internet in the 90's but without those tiled backgrounds ;)- https://1mb.club/- https://512kb.club/- https://250kb.club/- https://10kbclub.com/- https://nocss.club/- https://nojs.club/You can lose several hours just going through links. You can find some very valuable information there. You could submit your sites there, too.

I just want a search engine that isn't retarded when it comes to programming related searches. Search engines now show normie results for anything programming that is above beginner level and github search has always been broken shit. What I have to do right now is to git clone repositories and grep through them.

That Google (as well as YouTube) would want to suffocate what was no doubt the most sophisticated of public information retrieval methods we had, to the degree that they do, is nothing short of a tragedy.I would make an exemption for indexing Twitter here, as their cache has allowed me to find a lot of URLs or entire posts for Tweets that have been deleted or censored in some way, and archive them. As far as the normie conception of there 'only being 5 websites', I'd say that they are essentially right in some ways. And the fact that Google continues to keep their results more and more insular (as far as the incestuous Silicon Valley / legacy media / technocratic political establishment goes) is probably a conscious play as far as this is concerned, as it only helps in their steady consolidation of everything.I think the solution here, which some of us are already carrying out by starting our own blogs, ActivityPub instances etc. is not unlike how we should be solving our much broader social problems (and can really be considered a part of it). That is, a return to a sense of locality in a world that is bent on destroying it. If I am looking for how to change the oil in my car, and my friend happens to be a mechanic, well, now everybody in my e-circle has access to that information that will be lost to most, because of the nature of search engines and the changing Web. The mutual, personal familiarity of everyone bypasses the 'trust test' that would ordinarily be required in judging the authority of random sources, and it's less susceptible to centralised changes from gigantic Judeo-American companies. Like shopping at a friend's business.

I use DDG and wish there was a way to automatically exclude certain websites from every search query, rather than manually adding "-facebook.com", "-instagram.com", "-stupidpeoplesearchsite.com", etc. As for reddit, I occasionally find useful information there, but it's default "new" site is filled with dark patterns and overall frustrating to use. Dropping in "old" in the URL (ie old.reddit.com) really strips away a lot of the nonsense though.

@chuck@videos.lukesmith.xyz theoretically you could edit the search engines in the browser settings to always include the settings in your queries

Once ranking of a websites in search engines was treated generally as a proxy for the success of a website it became inevitable that the one thing that ultimately mattered was achieving high ranking. Everything else was babble, what is in practical terms **worse** could outperform **better**.This also completely burned the notion of the web as a disruptive technology where The Small Guy could make A Big Difference. Attention of the masses is assumed to be mostly on social media, so if you're not on each of those sites and conforming to their business models' written and unwritten rules you're in practical terms on an internet with almost nobody looking at it, almost no influence, and are creating a free option for a plagiarist to discover and leverage. The conventions of how the internet now works are demotivating for the sorts of persons who contributed to the creation of the usefulness on internet and prospered from it. It has become a rather entrenched tool for effective propaganda while wearing a convincing facade to claim to meaningfully represent dissenting points of view.
