@amolith for practical purposes: are you also interested in bridging different services? I've recently used matterbridge to join IRC and Mattermost. At least for these protocols, that worked flawlessly. https://github.com/42wim/matterbridge - also their list of protocols (in the readme) may give you one or two more protocol ideas. Nextcloud talk or Mumble for example. I don't use either, this is not me voting for these two in particular. I'm just listing other open source solutions.

@amolith goes down the rabbit hole.I've reviewed over a hundred of these. Some additional recommendations:https://twin.me/ (P2P, closed source, France)BBMe https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/products/bbm-enterprise-bbme (Closed, centralized, Canada)https://onionshare.org (Open source, uses Tor, ad-hoc chat rooms)https://anonymousmessenger.ly (Open source, similar to Briar, uses less battery)Do you have any criteria like non 5 eyes based, open source, decentralized, etc? From your list it doesn't seem so.

@supernova Twinme looks interesting but being open source is pretty important. I hesitated to include Threema because it has a proprietary server but their solid crypto and actual focus on privacy convinced me to add it. Having a build specifically for people without Google Services is a big benefit imoBBMe would be same as Twinme, having at least an open server or an open client is like a minimum for me.I literally just tried OnionShare with a couple friends and it was a perfectly acceptable experience for anonymous chat :blobfoxdrakelike: Anonymous Messenger looks really interesting :bunthink: Briar is one of my favourite options but the battery usage can definitely be a pain

@amolith Tried most—Jami is fine. Briar is great, but extremely battery-consuming. Matrix, eh, the clients suck and the protocol implementations suck resources like starving vampires. Signal, only for family and people you are associated with publicly, if the point is privacy. XMPP is good, but the clients are not very good, besides Conversations and it's forks, which are decent. Tox has the worst clients, and I really don't see the point of it. Session is great, but suspicious because of Australian laws. Although the metadata removal through onion routing is absolutely great. I haven't used Threema, but it seems like a better version of Signal. It is not anonymous in the slightest, worse than Signal in some ways, but still good for relatives. And you should pay for this stuff! Not everyone can run a free service. Delta chat? Ew, email. No. Yeah, I'm up for testing a few.

@meshy I agree with everything you said except for Threema :P It *is* anonymous because you don't actually register with anything that can be tied to you; on opening the app for the first time, it generates a key and you're prompted to move the phone around/move your finger around on the screen to increase entropy and produce a slightly stronger key. That's the same thing GPG does on desktop. I really like Threema's business model; you pay for the app with money and … that's it. I think that's an honest and fantastic way to create software. Of course, I dislike that the server is proprietary but I do marginally trust their crypto after having read their whitepaper. The mobile app's UX is almost on par with Telegram's and that's saying a great deal; I think Telegram has the best mobile app I've ever touched and I doubt anything will ever surpass it. Last I checked, Threema's desktop client was less than ideal; it requires your phone to be connected to the internet because of the way it secures the connection iirc. A little jank but they should be working on a desktop client soon™> And you should pay for this stuff! Not everyone can run a free service.Yes, always contribute to projects from which you derive value, whether that's a monetary contribution or code :revblobfoxdrakelike: I agree that DeltaChat is not great for one of the same reasons I dislike Matrix; too much fucking metadata.I will add you to the list :aqua_salute:

@amolith well not all... but DeltaChat interests me, and I use rocketChat, IRC. Would try a couple of others.

Maybe Scuttlebutt and Retroshare are worth mentioning.

@amolith what is/are the goal(s) of the test? I will not touch many of those with a stick, but curious what you are trying to achieve. Yours, fellow self Hoster, Emanuel

@emanuel I want to give myself and any who are interested a way to test platforms with a larger group of people. For example, I've wanted to try Briar in the past and see how it might work with some friends, but there are too few existing users to give it a fair shake. With a bunch of people intentionally setting out to try things as a group, that becomes much easier.I'm already quite familiar with *most* of those platforms but I know a lot of people aren't and would appreciate the opportunity to test them with others.> I will not touch many of those with a stickI'm curious why :bunthink:

@amolith Hey Amolith it may seem really lame, but reflecting on it, i would have been better served not saying this / might cause a shitstorm dissecting this publically - and i do not have the time & desire to manage any of that. If you want,I ll gladly have a chat about it with you. Your or my BBB? plz DM me
