Is there any positive social benefit to pranking? Not comedy in general but specifically the practice of pulling pranks on other people.

For those answering "In Some Situations", I'd like to know what situations you have in mind.

@urusan about 17 years ago my friends found load of old traffic signals in yard of a building they were squatting. some became disco lights, one lad extracted red and green man pedestrian aspects, these are red/green fresnel lens sprayed with black paint with outline of the stick man masked so it can be scraped away. Red man was given a dog on a string (he kept this), the green man got a spliff in his mouth and "Smoke Green" added to it, and then he put it back into a on-street traffic signal!>>

@urusan this stayed in place for *years*, the Highways department even replaced it after removing it for a few weeks and it remained there until those signals were all replaced with LED aspects (instead of halogen lamps). I guess even the highways officers and traffic cops decided anything that might encourage stoners to take a closer look at pedestrian signals would *improve* road safety ๐Ÿ˜

@urusan maybe both, a prank against the authorities as you aren't normally allowed to alter traffic signals; but it was done in a way that didn't cause any safety hazard and even the authorities reactions were good natured - they could just as easily have gone through all the CCTV and had him arrested or raided the squat and nicked everyone on suspicion of theft of the other traffic signals (it was next to the old depot where the maintenance was carried out)

@urusan Antisocial behaviour, pure and simple, as far as I'm concerned.

@urusan having played sports growing up, pranking was an integral part of team culture. It requires vulnerability, humor and builds camaraderie because as another commenter mentions, you have to know someone well to prank them well. A good prank isnโ€™t too tame or too extreme, itโ€™s just right and should make everyone laugh.

@urusan interesting question, with some answers that made me think about pranks. In some situations they can take you out of a comfort zone, and make you take good decisions you otherwise wouldn't.But pranks can definitely also be harmful.I think pranks can do lot's both good and bad, and a good prank for some can be bad for others.

@urusan I think anything that is harmless to the prankee that doesn't cause people to laugh *at* them but with them. Obviously it completely depends on the person and the situation. If it's a mutual thing where you both understand the limits, I think it's okay

@urusan hmm, could disclosing privacy / security issues resulting from a social engineering exploit be done as a prank?
