I only managed it by going to work, saving every penny, and dealing with the shame of being poor and a "mature student" (I love that I was supposed to be embarrassed my parent couldn't pay my way through school as if it was some racially specific moral failing, and not evidence that capitalism is a shit economic system). And I got the bonus shame of being a white student, so I was regularly told I needed to leave to make space for a less privileged student of colour. These lovely folks really don't know poor white people exist, because we don't cross paths with them very often, and when we do we don't announce it. And when it's bloody obvious that the white person is in a state of poverty, the woke university belief is that the individual has done something to deserve it or it's making up for historical racism/colonialism/imperialism.

They’ve even come up with a new euphemism, “self-managed” abortions. I get that there have been arguments that abortions can be performed (relatively) safely by trained lay people who know what they’re doing, but it seems that the new woke position is that the actual reality of illegal or self-induced abortions either never happened or must not be talked about. Presumably, because it makes “self-managed” abortions look bad. This is again, the triumph over ideals over reality. That home-administered or back-alley abortions have commonly been a huge risk and danger to women, is no longer a reality statement, which is either true or not. @Childfree @tangleofsnakes it is unbelievable to me that they did. But to the best of my knowledge, they did it. My grandfather was an exceptionally gentle man who rarely even raised his voice. My aunts and uncles talk about how good their childhood was frequently and how much they miss their parents. I can only imagine how the violence he saw, which was mostly directed at his mother and sisters, affected how he chose to raise his children. And he adored his sisters.
