@coolboymew @vriska to get technical it was a distinct far-right movement that neo-nazis and white nationalists also wanted to co-opt. by the time you have people like david duke AND a literal amoral gay jew rebranding as "alt-right" it became a meaningless label. Yeah for a while it appeared to be a big-tent dissident movement but in truth it never was, it was groups clamoring for the popularity of the name.

But being a leftist meant you had to have this idea in your head that "social progress" as it was defined then intertwined with material progress. On a deeper level, I never truly believed in progressive social values regard race and sex. But I simply went along because the misnomer of "progress" meant that you needed that bullshit to enjoy a higher material basis of living which is really dumb when you think about it. And I grew up in a very progressive city so I never really wanted to interrogate that. I quietly suffered the failings of social progress thinking it was necessary to achieve material progress. I never liked it to begin with. I was convinced that eventually, I'd be proven right. Mind you... all the while I was thinking along these lines, I was exposed to more and more dissident right-wing things and it wasn't from 4chan. The internet from the '00s and and early '10s was a very different place and you could have /pol/ or /new/ discussions almost anywhere and it's absurd to think that "stormweenies" were stalking me. I already had in place a lot of what would be my new worldview. I had the all the facts there like a car needing to be assembled while I got around in my shitbox of a car. The Obama presidency is what brought all those facts "alive." That worldview was no longer the internal logic of a strange few internet spaces that I would "put on" while I was there to fit in with the "edgy" culture. It extended far beyond that.You'll see too that there are many generations of well meaning leftists who heard about /new/ and /pol/ and went there with the intention of converting people to the left or at least just trolling and "bullying" the "Nazis." And time and time again, they're the ones who end up flipping over to our side.Here on the fedi, we're at the cutting edge of open and free speech and there's still nobody out there who can change my mind on anything. And believe me... I would LOVE to be able to change my mind. As I mentioned... I live in a very progressive city and my worldview would make me a pariah if anybody knew.

We were all supposed to believe that a black president meant a different president. I actually got into conflict with a certain socialist group because even though I knew more about orthodox Marxism than most people there, my conservative social values were seen as incompatible. I even asked one of the leaders if he thought that "social progress" had any bearing on material progress outside of more prosperous socieites allowing for more libertine values. He said that they were linked but, of course, he couldn't tell me where it said that in any Marxist literature. But he assured me it was there.
