@cybette The E71 was a masterpiece. Software was a little bit icky, but this is one of my favorite phones.

@hejowhat same... even though I was working mainly on N-series phones at that time (doing multimedia integration), I used the E71 as my main device for almost 2 years.

@hejowhat @cybette Stumbled on my old beaten e71 stashed in a crate yesterday. I normally get rid of my old phones, but couldn't bring myself to get rid of it. Think i used it for about 5 years, before finally moving over to Android - well #cyanogenmod on a Samsung Galaxy

The new Nokias by HMD aren't very.... exciting. Sure, having 3 years of OS updates is nice, but why would I want to use an uninteresting phone for so long? I wish my #AsusZenFone6 had another year of updates though, this device is still a joy to use.#Nokia #HMD

@Chrisleon27 HMD themselves... I don't get your question. HMD is a Finnish company that works with Nokia but is not owned by Nokia if that's what you're wondering.

@cybette I find it difficult to be enthusiastic about many new phones. The Huawei stuff was decent but loss of Android has put them out of the market. Honor could go the same way.Actually, the Nokia X series are decent value for money with the features they offer.

@neildarlow @cybette I really find most phones now are more than adequate for most users. When I worked, I got a new company phone every year or two. Now I only replaced my motog phone because it went for a swim. And I wouldn't buy an iPhone, but I wouldn't buy a top of the range android phone either.

@wyliecoyoteuk @neildarlow Yeah well at least previously phones were fun and exciting, there were different form factors and different operating systems to suit one's needs. Those phones could also last quite a while (I remember Nokia made maintenance releases for a long time for many models) but I constantly wanted to try new ones to experience the differences. Nowadays phones mostly look the same with just 2 major OSes to choose from.

@cybette actually the producer should be responsible for every security update 'possible' for live time.We should be able to sue them for every damage been made, if he could have prevented it. Isn't that the norm for stuff like cars nowadays?

@neildarlow @cybette In fact I think that there should be a mandatory minimum of 10 years for support from manufacturers. The stupid turnover of these devices is a really bad environmental problem

@wyliecoyoteuk @cybette As an electronics designer, I used to design for a service life of 10 years, minimum. In fact, one company I worked for was shut down and a cottage industry was created to support customers' hardware which continued for 20 years+ after the initial introduction.A problem, aside from falsely introduced software obsolesence, is that long service life and low manufacturing cost are contradictory. I was a vocal opponent to offshore manufacture as a precursor to cost cutting.

@neildarlow @cybette Software is often written off too early.I remember one of our customers was a company formed by redundant IBM engineers.Turned out that IBM had closed part of their database operation, then discovered that they still had contracts with some large customers (including some of their own divisions) that used the product. They approached the engineers to come back as contractors, but they formed their own company and bargained for the rights to the software.

@wyliecoyoteuk @neildarlow unfortunately in consumer electronics (generally), hardware makes money but not software (updates). I also lament the lack of support after 1-2 years for most devices. many times I want to sell/give a perfectly usable device to others, but hesitate because of that.the original #Jolla phone received 7 years of #SailfishOS updates, which is practically unheard of.

@neildarlow @cybette So many of our industries are built on obsolescence. Perfectly good devices are discarded without any good reasons.
