Wtf is up with the sound balance? The bass is overly excessive (even gave me a headache) and the dialogues are barely audible. So I couldn't follow the story even if it was good. I mean, I play the timpani and appreciate a good bass at appropriate levels, but hurting my eardrums doesn't make it enjoyable. And what's with the excessive slow-mo?

No wonder the movie is so long (and only covers half the book) and if not for the bombastic bass I could have dozed off. Even the confusing Tenet from last year was more enjoyable. Much disappointment for the first movie in a theater this year.

@cybette In this instance, I'm going to say it may have been an issue with the theater you saw it in. I didn't have a sound problem when I saw it yesterday, & there were only a few lines closer to the end I couldn't catch.

Was it in isense theater or the normal one? Maybe the eq was a bit off in that show. Too bad your movie watching wasn’t good.

I watched the Dune today in isense theater and sound wasn’t too loud. It was loud usually when they showed the ships.

@make I watched it in the normal theater, not iSense. maybe like you said the eq was off in Sali 2, or maybe it was the seats I selected (corner, next to the wall, so we were nicely distanced from others but I think that's where the subwoofer is located). but yeah, one of the worst experiences I've had in a while. glad yours was better!

@cybette As to the movie, the length was perfect! Two & a quarter to 2 & a half hours is perfect for a full story. He chose well to cut it there because the book jumps several years at that point. To make the whole book into one movie would be a folly.

@cybette The storytelling & the pace are also things I enjoyed greatly. We have waaaay too many rushed movies. Please allow at least one every couple of years that is more contemplative & covers all the necessities. I'd have to go all the way back to The Fellowship of the Ring to find this good of a setup, and even further back to Snow Falling on Cedars to find one this well-paced. This is a very, very rare treasure, & one which I have been searching about a decade for.

@cybette I would sum it up this way: this is a movie for people who like the flow of storytelling which comes from 20th century fiction, not the flow which comes from video games, comic books, & 21st century fiction. I think it's going to appeal to older audiences & those of a more patient & contemplative nature.#Dune

@SlowRain @cybette I have to watch this one. I’m kind of looking forward to it, even though I’ve never read the books. #Dune

@rd The novel is worth a read, but the jump in time wasn't handled very well.@cybette

@SlowRain @rd I'm glad you enjoyed it, but it was hard for me because I couldn't hear anything (spoken), so no matter what the pacing was, I couldn't follow because I didn't know where it was going.even if I could hear what was going on, it didn't seem like there was much character development, just a lot of wide-panning scenes in slo-mo. not much storytelling.I've not read the book either, but the movie experience should not depend (mostly) on whether or not I've read the source material.

@SlowRain @rd I enjoyed LOTR, also long movies, but pacing was fine. I only read the books after watching the movies, and that was fine too.maybe I'll give Dune another shot when I can watch it on some streaming service with English subtitles available. maybe I'll read the book first to know the characters more since the movie didn't show much imo. but still, one of the worst experiences I've had in the theaters in a while.

@cybette I also didn't like it too much, 4/5 at maximum. The visual style was a bit boring (unrealistic cgi low poly stuff with gray texture) and towards the end pacing was poor. Last 30 minutes felt like a hour. And I do like old style slow movies.

@cos I also found myself comparing it to other stuff.."epic" movies - LOTR did it way betterspace adventures - Firefly (TV series) did it much betterspace politics - Star Wars did it better🤷 "Last 30 minutes felt like a hour." <- THIS. I kept checking my watch in the last 30 minutes or so, wondering when it'll end (and no I didn't need a toilet break).

@cybette I get the sound part. That would absolutely ruin everything. However, the dialogue was plot & character development, so if you couldn't hear that, you'd walk away unimpressed (although I was blown away by the cinematography as well). Don't worry. You don't have to read the novel to understand the story. Everything is explained quite well. But I would definitely give it a second chance. I've only seen 2 great movies made in the 21st century, & this is one of them.
