@fluffy Crypto is supposed to be a new money but I only ever see people do the stonks game with it. How are you using it? I find next to no one online taking it and it'd be ages before physical stores do if ever. Its dependent on power and internet as much as a debit/credit card. Way too easy to be cut off from your money.

@DerSauerkraut @fluffy it's kind of the state of everything, like stocks, no one is buying them in general for ownership in companies just to dump or rake in dividends. Precious metals, people aren't buying them to sell them later to manufacturers. Even housing in many places aren't being sold to people who want to live in them. It's all speculative bubbles for dumping on the next sucker

@DerSauerkraut @fluffy I am talking about futures trading, not actually making/possessing the stuff. With futures they are on 90 day contracts and the miner is paid for the supply of the ores then you sell to a mill/refinery prior to receiving shipment. Note that you do need to be careful getting into futures trading.Prices have increased significantly in the past year due to increased demand in semi-conductors. tomshardware.com/news/rare-earth-metal-pricing-skyrockets-may-result-in-higher-electronics-pricing

@Aether @fluffy So with futures you are the middle man funding the mine so they digg the ore, and as reward get to sell the ore to the refineries?

@DerSauerkraut @fluffy More or less. Info here nerdwallet.com/article/investing/started-futures-tradingBasically the miner needs money to pay for the ore extraction and there is a contract that at a set date in the future you or a group you have a share in will pay an agreed sum of money for, say $50/t for lithium ore. The assumption of the trader is that it will increase to say $55/t for the ore in the time between now and the delivery date, normally 90days for ores. The goal is to sell to the refinery at $55/t and you pocket the difference of $5/t. Generally commodities prices will fluctuate +/- 10%. Although there are patterns Australian lamb futures typically dip prior to Ramadan and go up for Eid for instance. Problem is black swan events can happen like with oil last year when there was a sudden drop in demand and a lot of futures traders were forced to pay to take the oil of their hands. Hence why the price of oil was negative last year.

@DerSauerkraut @fluffy Yeah, there was a crash in demand in oil demand due to COVID due to 90% of the worlds planes being grounded in March 2020. The result was all the contracts that were signed in January 2020 were due for delivery in April 2020 and there was a global scramble to put all the crude oil that had been ordered somewhere and the bankers were paying people to take it off their hands.A lot of banks and hedge funds put money in oil futures as it is generally more predictable than having cash sitting around so there were a lot of bankers suddenly needing to find a home for huge shipments of crude oil they had paid for.

@Aether @fluffy Yeah the lockdowns screwed up everything. Funny what happens when consoomerism gets capped lol.Didn't realize they bury most monies into oil futures though. That explains even better why the energy sector is against innovation and trying to implement nuclear.

@DerSauerkraut @fluffy There is a need to have a financial sector in the economy to provide lubricant for the machine. Problem is that we are now in a position where the machine has to much grease and it is stopping everything else from working correctly.
