I just defended myself against Kathleen Stock OBE and wanted to give more context without driving my Substack subscribers insane with more emails. A few days before Christmas, I received a hand-delivered threatening message through my postbox--which is located on the inside of my building. I phoned the police and while waiting for them noticed on Twitter that Kathleen had painted me the way trans rights activists have been painting me for years by saying that I had "instigated a pile-on" towards the loathsome , abusive AGP academic Grace Lavery. I object to that framing very much. Trans rights activists are unpredictable and volatile and many of them believe that people like me and JK Rowling want trans people to literally die. I don't appreciate Stock adding another coat of paint to any target that might be drawn on my back by deliberately decontextualising my tweet to Lavery. After doing nothing but support her for years--including offering to return my Honorary Degree to UEA when they cancelled a talk by her--I am genuinely perplexed by her behaviour. And I will not stand by while she accuses me of hyperbole while the ACLU is editing the word 'woman' out of Ruth Bader Ginsburg quotes, the Lancet is referring to women as 'bodies with vaginas' and we're well into the second generation of kids whose mental and physical health has been permanently damaged by proponents of Queer Theory. I believe in her book she also takes pot-shots at Julia Long. I argue that she could put her OBE to better use by borrowing some of that woman's urgency.

@Glinner She also craps on Sheila Jeffreys, who has been out there forever and without whose outspoken courage the territory Stock is trotting around, pee-marking the boundaries of acceptable discourse, would be unavailable.

@Glinner Kathleen "I've got transwidows to sell out" Stock. She is indeed an arse.

@Glinner Lavery gets piled on because he deliberately instigates it himself. He's gross and spiteful.

@FemaleIsNotAFeeling I have great respect for the work of both Linehan and Stock (I haven’t missed an ep of The Mess We’re In yet and have followed Stock’s posts for years as she started to engage gender from a philosophical perspective, promoting plenty of backlash from her own community.) They both do excellent work which I keep up with, but I don’t keep up with the interpersonal stuff, as who knows what other PMs, private conversations, etc we don’t have access to. (Even checking Stock’s Twitter on this half the tweets are already deleted and I can’t make heads or tails of it.) There’s only so much time in the world. It’s similar in the US where a bunch of women are mad about some things Helen Joyce has said about Jennifer Bilek. Admittedly I have a more of a bias there as Bilek’s lens is not something that would ever draw me in, whereas Joyce has what is to me some of most clear-eyed writing on this topic, but I’m not interested in throwing either of them under the bus or getting deep into internet beef. At the end of the day, the writing and interviews of Jane Clare Jones, Helen Joyce, Daniel Kaufman, and Kathleen Stock are what got me here—and Linehan facilitated much of that with his YouTube channel!—and I’m grateful for all their contributions to this. I don’t have a desire to try to keep up with interpersonal stuff though.
