I want people to stop pretending that love and intimacy between straight males is some kind of horrific taboo in our society. Every man I’ve ever been with has been head over heels in platonic love with his friends to the extent that he gets misty-eyed talking about it. This wouldn’t signify anything if it weren’t for the fact that men seem to give all of their most unconditional, earnest and vulnerable feelings to other men, while even the best of them struggle to see relationships with women as anything other than conditional and transactional. Sometimes I get so angry at the loyalty men show one another. It often isn’t extended to women, and the culture doesn’t reward women who are loyal to other women— it atomizes and isolates us and makes genuine connection difficult sometimes, with both men and women. It’s a source of pain for me. I don’t want to hear about your “buds”. TL;DR If I have to hear one more straight man moved to tears by Bruce Springsteen I’m going to bust a gasket

I have very few friends in general, and even the best of my female friends have almost no time for me, especially if they have a man or a family in their lives, I can barely get them alone to connect with me, and usually that time is limited and constantly under threat from their domestic duties.Whereas even male friends of mine who say they have "no friends" spend hours with other men, gaming, hanging out, smoking weed, whatever, and just bask endlessly in their comradery. They call it "bro-mance" for a reason, and there also is no word like that to express connection and friendship between women because it doesn't seem to exist on the same level, or if it does it seems to be fleeting and dissipates as soon as someone gets involved with an intimate sexual partner.

My take is that many people go through years of education without either learning anything or maturing in any way. Therefore we have a huge number of adults who are developmentally still young teens. Sure, they "know" lots of stuff, but they lack life experience or the ability to reason, so they perceive life as a series of fixed ideological standpoint. Social media has created a global playground for the nastier teasing and name-calling behaviour which the vast majority of people grow out of as they leave school. The anonymity and the separation from reality means that this bullying can be ramped up several notches with impunity and hitched to any political/social cause. Basically, I think they get off on the power which they are afforded in the current climate. I wish Twatter all the joy of them. I have better things to do with my time and energy.

@harpyharpyharpy There's a few reasons for that. Some are old and built into what let us survive as a species before we reached the more civilized era we're in now. Even today, it's still applicable. Men die for women, men die with men. In general, it's loyalty given for loyalty shown. I remember one situation where a person had assaulted my cousin, I was going out looking for the person that hurt her. I ran out of seats in the car. Did not ask for help, it was just given. Completely understood how badly it could go, but nobody asked or blinked at it, my friends were just in, and I wasn't surprised.Now, when it comes to relationships, it's always in question whether a partner will trade up at the first opportunity. It's a question whether they'll be faithful, when I am. I've had friends come to me hat in hand, as if they'd done something wrong, because a female partner had made a play for them. Starting to see where the differences are? By all means, be better than that. If your actions make you worth that loyalty, you can get it. More often than not, it doesn't even need to be earned per se, it just needs to stay unbroken.
