“Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”I hate this pithy conservative nonsense. It’s incompatible with any kind of platonic reason or Christian theology.This phrase posits a truth claim about a cause and its effect: Power is the cause of the effect that is corruption.Consider the highest possible power and see how it relates to the definition of corruption.The supreme good, the Deity, God our Creator, possesses all perfections in their highest respective degrees. This includes omnipotence. The Deity is all powerful. The deity is, by definition, incorruptible as corruption itself is deviation from the will of God.To say that power causes corruption is absurd because the most supremely powerful of all beings is also the furthest possible thing from corruption.Power magnifies character. A corrupt man with power will increase corruption. But give power to the righteous and you will increase righteousness.

@qwerty as for power being “merely” a magnifying factor for the corruption that already existed within the people who obtain it, no shit dude. Orwell’s point is that there is no human being whose intentions are so noble, whose soul is so pure, whose skills are so apt that they can be trusted with absolute power.

@mactonite @qwerty As for the relevance to this, he was asking anyone and everyone if he could just order in a ‘za instead of shitty hospital dinner, and everyone was giving him the runaround. even the floor manager was giving him an “its policy” line and it wasnt A: giving the guy any satisfaction B: no ‘za inboundimo this is a great example of an ossified bureaucracy, where no one has any actual power and has to clear everyhting with a higher up. in this system, nothing “outside the box” ever gets done without bribes, long wait times, or personal favors. in this instance, it makes (what little they have left) life intolerable, when a simple solution is at hand: tag every resident (not literally, give em a name badge or something) and color code their needsgreen food sticker: lucid, healthy, they can choose their own diet. let em order in some 11/10 kung pao chicken, they’re goodyellow food sticker: some restrictions, see chart. could be medication related, caloric limitations, allergies, or physical ailment (chron’s, diabetes, missing organs, dementia)red food sticker: prescribed diet only, NPO (nil per os nothing by mouth), check with dr for any changesbam, problem solved, any low wage scrub can help this person and theres no need to call up the chain to clear any questions

@qwerty That phrase was never meant to include the divine, it’s strictly for fallible humanity. It’s also true. If you’re hanging up on the word “absolute”, it has nothing to do with God. It just means power without restraint.

@qwerty Furthermore, I'd argue that power can DISTANCE one from corruption. Look at a dictator or king, who, individually, has little need for money because he has power without it. How do you bribe a nigga that can get everything he wants without money?And if they do become corrupt, we just remove them and try again. It's not like democracy where there's some shadow oligarchy behind the curtain leading everything and we just have to "vote harder next time" so that we can get a new coat of paint and things don't actually change.
