Note: I am not a parent! I just thought this was fascinating and also dovetails with some other accounts I’ve read of storytelling used for discipline (in other indigenous groups, not Arctic).

@beccabei You might be interested in this book:https://www.theguardian.com/books/2001/jan/28/societyThere's a lot in here about parenting. One thing the author says is that Inuit parents believe their newborn child is the reincarnation of someone who's recently died--so they treat their child and all children with the same respect they'd have treated the elder who they believe the child is the reincarnation of.

@DoctorDee Katy Bowman goes on about this book, which I also really want to read. It’s funny how this stuff interests me when the actual “being a parent” part doesn’t.

@beccabei I think I've heard of this one. And there's this classic--I love this book; it's one of the maybe dozen or so books that's given me a real understanding of how the world and people work. https://www.arvindguptatoys.com/arvindgupta/conconcept.pdfI'm not a parent either but I'm interested in parenting--to understand how I came to be who I am, and how the people around us were shaped as well.
