Shortly after Ida, I’ve been finding these outside. ( lower level backyard) The nasty buggers try to get in.They make a Pop sound when I smash them. I have been researching to find out what they are? Cricket larvae?Any help identifying is much appreciated.I know they’re gross.

@Jaime We call them grubworm around here. No idea what they’re the larval stage of, but they’re common. They were always around (unless you use an insecticide on your lawn). Likely, the soil became so saturated from the rain that they had to surface. You probably see a lot of earthworms and new ant mounds forming as well.

@Jaime These could be the larval stage of something (could be over-wintering-subterranean) that rose to the surface due to saturated soil. When I was a kid the scientific term for them was fish bait.

@Jaime I don't know if you have pets or not. I put dry borax around the edges of my basement. It keeps the bugs out for several months. You can make it in a liquid with water and mop it around too. It's not supposed to be good for pets though. I don't let my cat in the basement.Anyway, it seems like to me all kinds of creepy crawlies would prefer to have a roof over the head than to be out in the open.😂@EarlThePearls @receo

@Jaime @joebennett Jaime, those are June Bug (aka May Beetle) larvae, those pesky things that come out in early summer and fly into lighted windows and around lights. Totally harmless. They eat the roots of plants and your lawn, especially St. Augustine. Totally harmless to pets and humans. They have always been in your back yard but the recent heavy rains drove them out of the ground
