A very simple idea that just requires a little knowledge of RSS/XML and cell phone development. I think it could go a long way in making things from our side of the internet accessible to normies who can’t be bothered to use phones outside of the very narrow class of behavior they are wont to.My website: https://lukesmith.xyzGet all my videos off YouTube: https://videos.lukesmith.xyzor Odysee: https://odysee.com/$/invite/@Luke:7Please donate: https://donate.lukesmith.xyzOR affiliate links to things l use:https://www.vultr.com/?ref=8384069-6G Get a VPS and host a website or server for anything else.https://www.epik.com/?affid=we2ro7sa6 Get a cheap and reliable domain name with Epik.

@luke ActivityPub could work even better than RSS, normies can sign up and leave likes and comments like they do on twitter

@luke ActivityPub is a better solution for this problem imo. Get people on the fediverse.

@miklol2@lukeAbsolutely. Everything you've described, having Normie-friendly apps, push notifications, a single URL to submit, all exists in the current ActivityPub Fediverse. And the software these days is surprisingly good, user-friendly and resilient. In fact, I've just received a notification from my Fedilab app on Android about this video, and I'm commenting, all in a federated way. There's no reason you couldn't have a podcast on the Fediverse. In fact, there exists ActivityPub designed for audio stuff.

@torresjrjr @luke Yup, I'm commenting from my own pleroma instance using Husky on Android. Very slick interface, and it supports a lot of Pleroma features.Start shilling more for the fediverse, maybe even post audio/video clips of your podcast(s) on a Pleroma or Peertube account and encourage normies to get on. I posted an audio clip of an SPC-to-OPL3 conversion that bisqwit did in one of his videos not too long ago, it works great.

@luke As simple and straight forward as this idea and RSS feeds is, the real challenge is getting normies to even try it. You have to remember that the normie mindset is that of willful ignorance and down right resistance to anything outside of their comfort zone when it comes to technology. As cringey as it sounds, something like this would have to be "branded" to appeal to normies as something new and fresh. Case in point, normies didn't really start using server side storage until it was re-branded as a "Cloud service". Simply uttering the phrase "RSS" to a normie will almost certainly result in a 1000 yard stare as they completely dismiss the idea in favor of looking forward to their next facebook dopamine rush. It'd have to be described in terms that they are familiar with. And that takes someone skilled in marketing and normie/zoomer speak. So basically, making the app is only half the battle. Otherwise you just have another tool only utilized by a small niche of tech savvy individuals.

@luke Epik got hacked. I am sure your home address is out there. Take care. Don’t promote the Epik affiliate link.As for the mobile app, are you looking for a mobile app code generator, that generates a native app, and then you want to use it to generate an app that you publish in an app store? Are you familiar with Progressive Web Applications (PWA)? PWA lets you add any webpage to the home screen of your phone. Often you see it when you visite a webpage, a message asking you to add the webpage as an app the home screen of your phone.

@zhoreeq@mstdn.netwhood.online no, the point Luke is making here is that normies need to have the easiest thing possible to get their updates and there is nothing easier than getting some sort of pseudo-app on their phone and it is already something they are used to doing. It is quite common these days to be browsing the internet on your phone and getting a pop up or something that asks if you want to download an app or web app for a better experience or something. If something like Luke is describing existed than those of us with our own websites could do the same thing with a few lines of JavaScript. The way we get normies is to meet them where they are at and have them do things the way they always have done them. Things like ActivityPub and RSS in its current form will never catch on for the same reason that the year of the Linux desktop will never happen, normies take the path of least resistance in technology.

But Luke the normies have iPhones. You gotta have your app pass through Apple.in's "reviewers" and pay $100/year for your special developer license to keep it on the app store. In all seriousness I could definitely see a FOSS Android project where you just modify a config file (app name, rss link, main color, icon) and run gradle assemble to get your APK. The harder part is actually making the app. If no one else smarter than me takes a crack at it maybe I'll have a look.

I saw a lot of people in these comments talking about how ActivityPub could be used as a solution to this problem but I think Luke's suggestion is a much better idea than that. The whole point of this is to get normies to use it and they clearly aren't or Luke wouldn't be having this problem since he is already here on PeerTube so it's not a good solution. It is important not to let our excitement for a technology cloud our judgement of reality. I wrote more about it here:https://jacobwsmith.xyz/stories/activitypub.html

@jeedraWell not with this kind of blackpilled attitude. The reason I think was because site owners wanted to track followers via email. But how does email ensure you're unique? Well its really gmails demand for a phone number that drives most of that.We need an anonymous solution for notifications and rss fits that need.@luke
