@ademalsasa I don't think that XMPP has a good future, because Matrix is - for my opinion - way better. And I only know about 1-3 XMPP-users and everyone of them uses Matrix too.

@ademalsasa because it is irrelevant. It lacked features -> nobody used it -> nobody cared to implement better software -> lacking features -> no users -> etc. It's an endless vicious cycle.

@ademalsasa As guy who used to run both XMPP (ejabberd) and Matrix (Synapse). XMPP is far more light in terms of resource eating. Meanwhile, Synapse is pretty fat.From user pov. There are lots of XMPP clients but most of them suck in terms UI apart from Dino, but it is Linux only so... yeah.On Matrix there is one single client. Element.

@ademalsasa My friends not using it is #1, but I'd also miss crowded rooms like IRC. Or vocal capacity as discord has (I wish I could ditch discord altogether... But friends).

@ademalsasa "My friends are not there" is something stupid, you can convert them to XMPP if you want. And if they are really your friends and they wish to keep the friendship, they will follow you anywhere

@ademalsasa I would say it is a combination of factors for me personally:No good looking clients - therefore it was hard "recuiting" friends and family to itClients are just too different - some supports OMEMO, other dont, other has their own variant so people just send cleartext messages anyway

@ademalsasa I use it sometimes, but only a few of my friends are on there, so I have other communication methods. It's difficult to get everyone to switch to one online platform if they are used to something like Facebook or Whatsapp.

It's not like "facts" or a huge argument.I think one of the biggest problems with XMPP right now is that it's a community that isn't really interested in trying to become what matrix is heading off too.Matrix is suceeding really well now too

@ademalsasa I do use it. I currently have @snikket_im on my Android. But there are two main reasons I don't use it for all chat. One is the first option in your poll; I can't use it to chat with people who don't also use it and don't want to install YACA (Yet Another Chat App). The other is that existing XMPP clients have been optimized for the "barbeque"; 1=1 and informal group chats. Element currently has a better UX for the "banquet"; large public channels traditionally hosted on IRC.#YACA

@ademalsasa Most clients have poor UI and UX, multi-device messaging is a pain, encryption randomly fails. XMPP just isn't fun.Matrix on the other hand is the complete opposite: modern clients, intuitive multi-device handling, reliable encryption.

@ademalsasa That would be cool but I need to get an XMPP client into use on a laptop first. I generally try to reserve my mobile device for day-to-day necessities and communicating with family and friends. Once Snikket has a web client, I will probably switch to using that on the desktop.

@loweel GNU/Linux, usually @trisquel . I think the last desktop XMPP apps I tried were Dino and Gaijim. Compatibility between them using some of the same accounts wasn't great, but that could have been the age of the app versions in the Trisquel version I was using. I'm thinking about moving to Debian testing to get newer package versions. @ademalsasa #XMPP

@seleaHi Maike,We were similarly cautious about OMEMO once, then we watched a video about how the DoubleRatchet algorithm works and OMEMO is no longer an issue.I2P federation is now our biggest hurdle. We don't believe people should have to buy domain names and be beholden to #certificateAuthorities for basic #communication.@2342 @maikek @ademalsasa
