https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D8%B3%D8%AD%D9%84%D8%A8#ArabicIn English the old name for orchid was "ballockwort" orchid derives from the Ancient Greek word meaning testicles. Which is why the euphemism for castration is Orchiectomy.the Irish word for orchid derives from the irish word for testicles.as does the Arabic word, admittedly fox testicles.

@Spring It's funny because the other day i was reading about the associations of orchid in chinese culture (how it's this virtuous plant that survives on no food, like a scholar/gentleman who is still virtuous and learned despite poverty)and orchid has almost the opposite association in both Indo-European and Semitic languages.

@Spring to me the orchid is a particularly needy plant that requires a lot help from humans (think of orchids kept in a green house). yet in chinese culture it has opposite associatons.

@Spuntime Where do orchids originate? I am assuming in their natural environment they thrive happily as do all other plants, but doubtless they do need a lot of help when moved to a non-native and very different enviroment. A good metaphor for other things perhaps.

@Spring @Spuntime You get orchids pretty much everywhere, they’re one of the largest flowering plant families.

@Flick @Spring There are orchids in Provence apparently. Which surprised me.

@Flick @Spuntime @Spring In July I was on a coach journey that was taking me back home from the weekend trip I spent at Glastonbury. My family were pretty much sleeping on the coach as it was a long journey. I was looking out the window throughout the journey. I loved looking out the window just seeing the towns in England I never been or heard of. The  coach drove through Salisbury and i got to see stonehedge from the window :).  The coach drove through the countryside and I aslo saw a bluebell filed. I never seen a bluebell field before. I just loved how beautiful it was.

@SpuntimeThey all are. I live close to a nationally significant orchid meadow, we get all sorts. My favourite is the monkey orchid, which only grows in three places in the British Isles. @Spring
