Question fedi people.I have an Atom N455 processor netbook and maximum RAM that it can capable of is 2GB. I want to install Debian on it preferably minimal no DE for a server use. Is it preferable to use the 32-bit version or just 64-bit? Is encrypting the drive also hurt the performance on this processor?Thank you

@sandycorzeta I would say if the processor handles 64-bit then would with that. Encryption would affect performance some for sure. I'm not sure if that model has the AES instruction set. I don't see it on its info page from Intel. If it does not have it then performance would be hit even more. I would advise against it in this case but it's up to you and how much load will actually be on this server.

@sandycorzetaIn this case: 32bit. You'd run short with RAM using 64 bit

@mgrondin@youdabomb.social load probably not so intensive, as i planning to make it as own small NAS server and fedi instance (either misskey or pleroma).

@sandycorzeta Then it should be fine...using encryption there will be a drop in performance but only the load will decide if it's noticeable or not.

@sandycorzeta consider running cryptsetup benchmark prior to picking a cipher. Also maybe look into chacha12 or chacha20 as they seem to perform better on chips that do not have the AES instruction sethttps://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/kyj373/cryptsetup_reencrypt_it_worked/gjh8xnp/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

@wauz@muenchen.social would 32bit could lead into limited on some apps package? or it just on a rare case?...

@sandycorzetaI don't think so. At least with Debian, there should be no trouble. Due to small RAM, you must be careful not to overload it. If you want a server, alsi consider using a Raspberry Pi or similar. Smaller energy costs are worth the money.I am definitely the type who outwears hardware, but some times a jump must be dared. ARM technology is at least worth thinking of.

@wauz@muenchen.social im not gonna spending any money yet for a Pi even though im tempted to use that as all purpose server. I have 2 Atom netbook laying around in my house, and not having it used seems wasteful. So, im having the idea to repurpose it. Indeed energy costs is consideration. But since these Atom netbooks are not even surpass 10W each, i guess i still ok with it.Thanks for the heads up, i think im going to use the 32-bit one instead.

@sandycorzetaI can see that. Those machines are imo stuck to 32b systems, when they not exceed 2GB RAM. Giving them an SSD will speed them up, better than 64b system
