Nazi encounters today and shitload of slave collaborators. 🀒 I smell civil war in EU SSR. Gonna get some airsoft gun that I can modify like Umarex hdr 50. Unless someone has better idea. That's only sort of thing I can get here without gov. permission + crossbow or bow should do it.

@akeno Airsoft gun? I would go for a cross bow. If you really want to do some damage. I guess the airsoft gun could be used as a psychological tool if someone does not know it is an airsoft gun.

@akeno @phicyclist That's easy! Have a look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_handgun_and_rifle_cartridgesIf we take one of the smallest rifle calibers for instance, .22 Long Rifle, you see that it has 137 ft lbs of energy. That translates to about 186 J. So if you up the power of the air gun to 18 J, this rifle is about 10x "stronger". I would not recommend 18 J for any serious self defense use. If you look at a crossbow, those are strong enough to take down moose, elk, deer and humans. In addition, they (...)

@phicyclist @h4890 @akeno The value of a crossbow is that allows to score hits without dedicating one's life to training. In that regard, I think, Instant Legolas makes crossbow unnecessary and is superior otherwise. It is repeating and crossbow is not. Of course crossbow is still far more powerful, in case you have to hunt moose or something. This can be traded further, but for SHTF situation in EU, my vote is for Instant Legolas.

@akeno The choice depends on what you want.If you want the most practical, reliable, and usable gun for without-rule-of-law SHTF, you are probably best off with FGC-9 with kitchen-made ECM barrel. It is designed by Europeans and suited for that environment the best. Its downside is, it requires standard 9mm Luger ammunition, but if you can live with that, it crushes all the airsoft mods because it works and will not explode and kill you (it needs an airsoft trigger pack though). If discovery is concern until the onset of SHTF, get Instant Legolas or something like that, then use it like Liberator to trade it for a factory gun.

@akeno @phicyclist Oh yes, there are definitely some powerful airguns out there. But the annoying thing with those, as I understand it, is that either you have to fill them yourself, pumping manually for ages, or you need a lot of extra equipment to fill your own air tanks to a high enough level of pressure. With regular bullets, you are dependent on cases and gun powder which has its own disadvantages. So no ideal solution either way if you are preparing for a disaster and you don't (...)

@h4890 @akeno @phicyclist 22 LR can still be pretty damn effective. Personally I consider 9mm to be the bare minimum for self-defense, but definitely prefer 45 ACP for its versatility against criminals and wildlife. Whether it is an air gun, crossbow, or a sling shot. It really comes down to accuracy and shot placement. 18 J to the adams apple, or an eye socket can definitely be effective in stopping a human from attacking you immediately. However against wildlife it's going to be slightly more difficult, but not impossible to accomplish.

@akeno @phicyclist But remember, with a bow or a crossbow you can reuse the arrows. So you just need 5 or 10 or so to start with, and those you can reuse for quite some time depending on where and how you practice. I think the arrows I bought for my bow where 5 or 6 EUR a piece with field tips. If you enjoy it, it's probably not too hard to learn to make your own arrows as well. That can be quite an artistic activity as well. =)

@h4890 @akeno @phicyclist Shotguns are definitely good for home defense if you are up against one attacker. There are near endless options for shotgun rounds that will not over-penetrate through walls. However, if you are facing multiple attackers invading your home. Then you better have a semi-automatic high capacity magazine fed shotgun, or you're potentially in big trouble. Most traditional shotguns have a much lower round capacity, increased recoil on follow up shots (depending on the round being used), and take significantly longer to reload. Overall when it comes to the best home defense gun I believe an AR-15 with a 7.5-10.5 inch barrel, 40 round magazine, and chambered in 300 blackout packing sub-sonic rounds are ideal for home defense. Whether you are facing one home invader, or a dozen you are prepared. You also won't have a case of tinnitus after you're done unleashing 2A justice to protect your family too.

@anonymoose @akeno @phicyclist Yes, sorry I was being unclear. That is actually what I meant when saying "depending on how and where you practice". If you practice on a range, you will be able to salvage most if not all your arrows. If you practice in the forrest, especially in the beginning, you will lose some. At least this is what happend to me when I started this summer. ;)

@yourhero @akeno @phicyclist But around here, the self defense story for me starts to break down a bit. When you are saying an AR 15, and that it lets you defend against multiple attackers, I sometimes wonder where does one draw the line for home self defense? Imagine you have several attackers with AR15, or attackers with gas masks, throwing in tear gas? I don't doubt for a moment that an AR 15 might be better than a shotgun for the reasons and scenario you describe, but it can lead (...)

@yourhero @akeno @phicyclist to an ever escalating "scenario building". At the end of the day, I guess it depends on the level of force you are anticipating, in which country you live etc. So living in western europe, I imagine you would be perfectly fine with a shotgun or a crossbow, since it is so rare in sweden (to take my example) with having to defend your home with a gun. But, I am interested, where do you draw the line for home self defense and think "ok, if the attackers have (...)

@h4890 @akeno @phicyclist It boils down to several factors. 1.) Who are you defending home against?2.) How many are you defending your home against?3.) At what point do you stand your ground, or choose to escape?4.) How prepared are you against multiple forms of home invasion?5.) Are you willing to sacrifice yourself to protect your family?Whether you are defending yourself against one attacker, or many. A team launching tear gas in through the windows, or a gang member with a hand gun. Both are going to try and submit you to their will. I choose the AR-15 as the logical Swiss Army Knife answer for most (not all) home invasion protection situations. It is simply a multi-tool that helps to ensure everyone's freedom from multiple attackers, thieves, and tyranny. Also I would not limit yourself to just having one firearm. I firmly believe that every household should have quick easy access to a bare minimum of 5-10+ firearms in multiple calibers and types at all times. Preferably ones that are best suited for each able bodied member of the household. Who is able to defend themselves and comprehends all of the rules for firearms safety. As well as practicing shooting regularly and receives professional training from experienced instructors too.You can be in situations where the odds are stacked against you. With a high capacity AR-15 nine times out of ten you are going to be the one stacking the odds against your opponent(s). At the very least you will be able to level the playing field a bit. Sure to some people who are not as knowledgeable and/or comfortable with firearms they may see an AR-15 as overkill. However, when your intent is to kill, or be killed. There isn't really such thing as overkill when the lives of you, your family, your pets, and your fellow community members are on the line.Every situation is going to be unique. If you plan for the unexpected then you are less likely to be surprised when shit hits the fan. You can't look at local statistics to determine the proper methods for self defense. You can live in the safest neighborhood in the world and still be the unlucky lottery winner of a gruesome home invasion. So choose to be the victor and never the victim. Have the best equipped toolbox filled with the most reliable and effective tools to protect yourself, your freedom, your family, and your community.
