I think that as the boomers start dying off, the labor shortage is only going to get stronger. Let's look at retail, for example: You could work at Lowe's or some chain retail store. Your pay would get a raise every so often to encourage sticking with the company. Sure, that's fine. The problem is that the base starting pay isn't nearly enough to live on unless you live with your parents and don't have many (mandatory) expenses in your life. Sure, you might be able to afford to live on your own if you work there for 7 years, but that doesn't do you any immediate good, so you simply don't apply because it won't pay the bills that need paying NOW. When most of the people that are currently getting paid enough to live comfortably first started, they were still getting paid enough to live comfortable then. So what happens when your already limited worker supply starts going away and nobody applies because they can't live off of your wages?

@WoodshopHandman They are going to have to automate all these jobs away, maybe try to import scabs from abroad but even they can't afford it

@The_Flaming_Eyeball @WoodshopHandman Automation is a good thing, a really good thing, if the economy is managed competently. The Western world has been on a several century sprint of technological development and periodically there are inventions that shake up the current industries through efficiency. If the economy is managed correctly, labor (or the income from labor) is seamlessly reallocated so people’s lives aren’t disrupted and the economy uses its labor resource in a maximally productive way.If you automate or a more efficient process is created and the economy is not well managed, maybe by stupid fuckers that think economies are natural and self regulating, then you get riots and they kill the people that profited from the economy that has left them out.If you don’t have a good paying job, why don’t you get one as a mercenary killing billionaires and their families and using legal mechanisms to acquire it like liens on their properties? If you can’t make a life for yourself through productive labor, you could make a life through hunting down the ultra wealthy. If there is no one alive to inherit a property, a court will be inclined to hand it over to anyone that has a lien on it.

@WoodshopHandman I've noticed at numerous places I've worked whenever the boomer retires they almost never replace them or if they do they get an agency or a temp in on minimum or near minimum wage to do the same job. Yet in my home town where my parents brought their first home for £18,000 in 1984 when that was about 2.5 times my fathers salary and there was a decent amount of work about. Now most of the big employers are gone and that house is about 10 times my salary and even the cheaper homes are 7-8X salary and the town is basically un-liveable due to migrants and crime.
