So wait...one small hack could make new people immune to ALL known viruses?https://youtu.be/9j7oEuFrGz4

@urusan Maybe not quite all, you'd have to leave at least one of each codon group working and a small fraction might get lucky. And there's a possibility that viruses from unmodified people could (eventually) get lucky enough mutating to jump to the modified group.

@alexbuzzbee True, though I think this will be pretty rare, especially if you take out enough codons. While I'm sure viruses will eventually arise for this population, they'll be much easier to stamp out. It's a smaller group (even assuming all humans have it one day in the future, it would largely eliminate zoonotic diseases). Also, viruses that change rapidly will have issues staying infectious and those that don't will be easy pickings for vaccines and other medications.

@urusan Not saying it wouldn't be very very effective; just not necessarily 100%.

@icedquinn Yes, but also given enough time to develop it...don't you think it's inevitable that rich people will pay huge sums of money to craft a never sick child?Alternately, even if we ban it in humans, there will certainly be demand for GMO livestock that don't get sick even in really cramped, unsanitary conditions. It's inevitable that this will get developed further now that it exists.

@urusan it's not really possible to ban it. opfor will just do it anyway.but its a disaster and going to result in perpetual fuckups.

@urusan let's say you make some decision like banning performance enhancing gene patching and you subsidize removal of hereditary illnesses.some opposing government you don't control says nah we're just going to let the rich do whatever they want.now you have a bunch of brainjacked super elites as an opponent and just sit around and run unrestricted warfare against you.we can't even write basic programs without memory leaks and pointer errors but now we're stuck with this crap and there's no realistic way to get rid of it :cirno_doubt:

@alexbuzzbee @urusan could also have different people use different subsets of codons, and then with enough modified people you get a good amount of herd immunity against all viruses

@ralismark @urusan That makes everyone reproductively incompatible with each other, probably not a good idea.
