Liberals will never fail to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. They are not a coherent political ideology, and not capable of wielding power.

@_cr0_tab Good take. For the Europeans reading: "Liberal" in the US means the American brand of Center/Leftism.

@cjd @_cr0_tab Consider the following:If liberals wielded power for an extended period of time, they'd be the status quo.So they could either:1. Support the status quo and become conservative.2. Turn against the status quo. But that'd mean being against their own rule, which'd lead to them losing it.

@wolf480pl @cjd Are you proposing that the status quo is bad because it is quo, as opposed to it giving rise to harmful material conditions?Furthermore, does this presuppose that all progress along a political axis is necessarily beneficial?

@_cr0_tab @cjd no. I'm only assuming that:1. "conservative" is defined as "support starus quo"2. being "Liberal" by US definition is mutually exclusive with being "conservative".I'm far from believing that all "progress" towards the "left" is beneficial, but that shouldn't be relevant here. My previous post doesn't say that liberals are good or bad, just that it's logical that they can't wield power.

@wolf480pl @cjdYep, because they do not represent a coherent ideology. They have no actual policy goal outside maintaining their position within the existing power dynamic. They are the status quo, all progressive trapping are merely part of their role as a counterbalance to maintain it's stable equilibrium.

@_cr0_tab @cjd IOW, their goal is to be "slightly left of the Republicans", dor.a certain definition of "left" ?

@_cr0_tab @wolf480pl I would say neither "conservative" nor "liberal" US ideologies are in any way coherent. They're better thought of as two distinct compromises between the many thousands of interest groups which exist in the US political landscape.

@wolf480pl @cjd Go for it? I've not talked about my preferred solutions. Merely stated a frustrating problem.

@_cr0_tab @cjd btw. I don't have much knowledge about what actual Republican and Democratic parties in the US behave like, and I'm intentionally ignoring the knowledge I do have. I'm treating them as abstract entities, independent of the status quo, policies, issues, debates that happen to be taking place in our current universe.

@_cr0_tab @cjd I mean, we have more than 2 parties in Poland and we also have a shitshow here, albeit a different one. But they do seem to be somewhat ideologically coherent, or at least pretend to be.

@wolf480pl @cjd Because of the way our bicameral congress, federal districts and first past the post voting system works it is incredibly hard to break out of the two party system. No third party has managed greater than ~4% in any presidential election in my lifetime. The Senate, our upper house of congress, is divided along state lines regardless of population. So the votes of both California with its population of nearly 40 million and Wyoming with it's 600 thousand have equal weight.

@_cr0_tab @cjd IMO it's not a bad idea to have different election/representation methods for lower and upper house of Parliament. Dissimilar redundancy.
