“Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg said the company's massive secret experiment designed to purposefully manipulate the emotions of its users was communicated ‘poorly.’‘It was poorly communicated. And for that communication we apologize. We never meant to upset you.’”https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-58206543Oh, sorry, did I put the wrong link in there?#apple #privacy #SiliconValley #spin #bullshit #HowStupidDoYouThinkWeAre

Also, read this: https://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/blog/2019/10/william-barr-and-winnie-poohWe’re not confused about what Apple is doing. They’re implementing client-side scanning… as requested by Barr/The FBI all the way back to end of 2019.And, as the Federighi interview shows, they’re barefaced lying about it. They know exactly what they’re doing and why.I’ve lost all trust in this company.(The only trust I had anyway was because of their business model.)Apple is just as bad as Google, if not worse, at this point.#apple #privacy

What do I think of Apple? My thoughts in 2015: https://ar.al/notes/apple-vs-google-on-privacy-a-tale-of-absolute-competitive-advantage/My thoughts in 2020: https://ar.al/2020/03/25/apple-just-killed-offline-web-apps-while-purporting-to-protect-your-privacy-why-thats-a-bad-thing-and-why-you-should-care/My thoughts today: https://ar.al/2021/08/08/apple-is-trying-to-redefine-what-it-means-to-violate-your-privacy-we-must-not-let-it/I stand by every word.Apple can no longer be trusted on privacy in the West (they already couldn’t in China as they capitulated to the Chinese government.)#apple #privacy

Is there an out for Apple? Can they still salvage their reputation? Maybe.Let’s talk in words corporations understand:1. Fire the VP responsible for this decision. One of those folks who takes the stage at your keynotes has to go.2. Personal apology by Tim Cook admitting they were wrong (no if/buts) and promising to implement a contractual/constitutional promise they will never implement any feature that uses data from your device to inform a third party or manipulate you (includes ads)…

… This must include a firm and explicit contractual/constitutional promise to never implement client-side scanning, “ghost users” or any other circumvention of your privacy/end-to-end encryption in any jurisdiction.I don’t see why anyone in the West should trust Apple for anything less than this. (And that’s if you ignore the whole China thing.)Do I see this happening? Not really. So, to reiterate what I said earlier:You should no longer trust Apple on privacy.#apple #privacy

@aral I'm not sure that I would restrict this to Apple. The entire discussion about e2e encryption in the EU silently acknowledges that weakening encryption is bad, so the preferred way around that is client side scanning.

@jens Oh, I’m not limiting it to them. I haven’t trusted the others for a long time. Also, having end-to-end encryption is quaint when you have client-side scanning. It’s like handing them clothes after you’ve seen them naked.

@aral#Privacy is just another unique selling proposition to #Apple. It's easy to make your customers believe in features they can't proof, when your code isn't #OpenSource. That's business. And you already explained by the Mafia comparison for Google, that you'll always be dependent on the goodwill of one company. In general digital sovereignty ends when you begin using (and trusting) #GAFAM. There are a lot #FOSS alternates, but you'll lose some comfort: https://prism-break.orgTo me, people need to get more knowledge and transparency about IT and companies have to be regulated concerning privacy as part of human rights. By this change might happen. Refering to your articles, thanks for sharing and contributing to the transparency part of it.
