i find it really funny how quacks will try to say any old medication is a treatment for COVID-19so let's see- hydroxychloroquine, antimalarial- azithromicin, antibiotic- ivermectin, antiparasitalhow would any of those affect a coronavirus attacking ACE2

@chjara >how would any of those affect a coronavirus attacking ACE2a z-pack (azithromicin) is used to treat pneumonia and bacterial infections of the lungs which are the primary cause of death among those who get sick from covid. sort of like people with HIV don't actually die from HIV.I haven't read much about the others because boring but some smart people I know have said they read about it and it checks out. it would hardly be the first time medication originally for one use found another (for example aspirin is used to treat heart conditions but was originally used for pain relief).

@fluffy yes, pneumonia is a factor in covid deaths, but that doesn't mean azt is a miracle cure for it

@chjara you're right of course. that said, i can't blame people who would otherwise have died without it for claiming it to be. it sure must feel like that to them.

@chjara Hydroxychloroquine binds to ACE2 receptors, that's part of why it was considered a potential drug at first.

@Moon @chjara Exactly this. This also what poor countries do, because they can't afford the vaccine: They are treating it like a Malaria variant.

@Moon @chjara it's a zinc ionophore, the zinc is what gets into the cells and attacks the virus

@hakui @Moon @chjara True. Quercetin or EGCG from green tea/matcha are good alternatives.https://twitter.com/verretor/status/1240971673584783360

@chjara I think what happens is that there’s a study testing it in cell culture that shows promising results and then people jump on that and promote it as a cure, without waiting for clinical trials, etc. BTW ivermectin has an interesting history: avermectins (of which ivermectin is one) are metabolites of soil bacteria, discovered in Japan in 1978. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avermectin?wprov=sfti1
