I got over 800 emails between signing out last night (end of day ~ 5:00 in the evening), and signing in this morning (start of day ~ 8:00 in the morning). Filters cut that down to a little bit more than 60, and after visual inspection of the rest, I read precisely 2 of them. Yea, email works GREAT. šŸ˜’

@mike Let's get back to postal mail and telegraphs. I've been saying this for years now! 😤

@mike what’s your job and why the heck are those people emailing you? I’ll probably have around 400 when I’ll be back in the office after 2 weeks, and that’s already too much imho.

@hund @kamme Most of it isn't from "people". My company seems to be under the deluded impression that email is the best way to notify people of pretty much anything. Unusual system message in a log? Email. Assigned a new ticket? Email. Process delayed? Email. Email. Email. That's why almost all of it gets filtered automatically. It's useless noise. There's more useless noise that isn't caught by my filters because it's close enough to not noise I don't want to take the chance. Still mostly crap.

@hund @kamme To make matters worse, I don't even know what some of this crap is. I got some this morning titled "**** **** Files Transferred", and all that was in the body of the message was a file name. I don't know what that file is or where it was transferred from or to. No one has mentioned it to me and I didn't ask to be notified of its delivery. I have NO idea why I get that message. I get them daily, multiple times a day.

@mike @hund that’s really bad imho, and very useless, but I’m probably preaching to the choir here. Is there something you can do about it? Besides filtering as much as possible…

@kamme @hund Not that I know of, other than filter as much as possible and deal with the rest. Honestly, I mostly ignore my email because it's so damn useless. If people need my attention, I'm available on Teams. If they send me an email, they're probably not going to get a response.

@mike wow that's bad. I even refuse to set up notifications for others in our monitoring system. If people want email notifications they're free to configure them themselves. On a bad day I get maybe 30 emails without any filtering enabled; usually less.@kamme @hund

@fedops During the day, I have no idea how many emails I'd get if I had filtering off. I shudder to think. I've always got Outlook open and filtering, so I don't have to know I guess. It's definitely more than 30. I just checked ONE of the folders I filter into (there are 20+ folders catch filtered stuff), and there was 46 in there since 8:00 this morning. I've never bothered to count, but I don't think the folder I checked is the one that gets the most messages.@kamme @hund

@mike @hund @kamme I used to get a similar update email multiple times a day so I set up a filter to auto forward to my boss and delete it. He decided it didn't need to be an email anymore.

@mike My work tried to create guidelines for communication. Including telling us that email should only be used for recording purposes. I loved it because I stopped checking my inbox. But then I'd just get a call asking why I haven't responded to their email šŸ™„. New plan? All emails more than 3 months old are deleted. šŸ‘. The pendulum swings....

@fedops Honestly, a couple years back we used to do notifications through Slack. It was actually better in my mind. It worked almost like a log file. I just turned off notifications on "channels" that weren't super important and I could get many notifications all at the same time without them intermingling and turning into a big mess of garbage. I miss those days.@kamme @hund

@mike I don't think your company is exceptional. In mine, in 4 years, I managed to turn "of course we send log messages by email" into "someone should have a look every week and try to suppress a few useless mail sources". I have not yet achieved "every automated email message is a bug" but I'm not losing hope.@hund @kamme

@MrDers I check my email maybe 3 or 4 times a day. If a matter is urgent, they'll contact me another way or they'll find someone else to resolve it for them. If it's not, it can wait.

@mike yeah I can see that in slack. We have teams, and I shudder to think what it would look like in that horrid interface.Just generally I think it's completely wrong to use notifications like a log stream. Notifications should trigger an action; log entries should be for reference, and could serve as a basis to generate higher-level notifications. Signal:noise ratios and all that...

@mike @fedops @hund that almost sounds like an RSS feed way of checking things, that might be an interesting approach, to be honest.

@kamme @fedops @hund Yea, very similar. The other nice thing about that was our whole team was in the channels, so we couldn't have one person say, "I didn't get the notification!" because we were all getting the exact same stuff.

@mike In my org I have a special filter that automatically deletes all emails from certain people who…let’s just say don’t ever send out anything productive, but send lots of emails nonetheless, and don’t know how to open a support ticket. The name of this filter? ā€œGood Day Sirā€

@mike Email or any form of communication is only as good as the effort people put into using it effectively.
