I'm considering moving instances. Not sure where, but maybe weirder.earth (they run the Hometown fork, which I'm curious about). When you move instances both your follows and your "followees" move to the new one, yeah? It's a little sad to leave my first Mastodon home, but I don't really use the local timeline and it has gotten too big and annoying and it's blocked in some other instances, so...Any other instance recommendations, or instances I should avoid?

@estebanm Followees is as simple as exporting and importing a file. For followers, there's a function to mark your account as a redirect, which should be automatically handled on the other side. Maybe having a super early version of mastodon would make it fail, idk. It's been around for ages anyway.>or instances I should avoid?Anything running mastodon. Pleroma do what mastodon't.

@Zergling_man Thanks for the info!Regarding Pleroma, what exactly does it have that Mastodon doesn't? I don't think I miss any features, really. Apart from being curious about Hometown's more local approach to things, I care more about moderation and the community that the software running it.

@estebanm The single most important feature is a configurable character limit, with a much saner default.Well, at least, I assume mastodon character limit can't be configured, since I've never seen it done, and 500 is awful. But also can handle >4 attachments/images.Those are the ones I care about, at least. There are a bunch of others like reactions but my client doesn't support them anyway.>I care more about moderation and the community that the software running it.Fair.

@Zergling_man Ah, yeah, character count can be annoying. I _think_ at least some forks support it. Hm, and more images could be nice, although I rarely upload anyway. Thanks again!

@estebanm >although I rarely upload anywayWhen a post with >4 images federates to mastodon, data is lost. ツUnlike with character limits where mastodon can still accept and process the complete text.Well, no, I can't say that for sure. I *think* that's how it works but maybe it stores all the images and just doesn't display the rest.

@Zergling_man @estebanm the mastodon character limit can't be configured but glitchsoc's can

@velartrill @estebanm In that case it may just be my client.

@Zergling_man @estebanm quite likely, mastodon clients often don't play nice with non-masto servers

@estebanm @Zergling_man Also most Pleroma front-ends (the default is Pleroma-FE but some run SoapBox) support markdown in posts so this would be italics and emoji responses. If you decide to self host, mastodon does take up more resources.

@velartrill @estebanm Well that's the thing. It handles pleroma too, with what appears to be the same code base. (So, eg., correctly fetches character limit.)Handles misskey too but uses separate code for viewing posts. Think everything else is shared though.

@Zergling_man @estebanm pleroma implements the mastodon client API, but has extra features mastodon clients often don't know how to handle

@djsumdog @estebanm Oh yeah and code blocks. I've found someone recently who has a habit of chucking random code tags in his posts. When viewing from mastodon it's nigh unreadable.

@Zergling_man @estebanm character limit fetching is a glitchsoc extension btw, not pleroma

@velartrill @estebanm Yeah but like, it does handle them. The client itself (seemingly) doesn't care about the number of attachments; on my FSE account, it'll render 15+. I'm not sure what the record I've found is.But the same post on pawoo or here will only show 4.

@Zergling_man @estebanm my point is that handling character limits doesn't mean it's pleroma-awaredo i understand correctly, that the server seems to be truncating attachments in the client protocol?? that is very bad behavior wtf

@velartrill @estebanm Well, I don't truly know. But that appears to be the case, yes. I could test it, I suppose.
