If the Luftwaffe had strafed & bombed the beaches with orders to kill as many Brits as they could - and U-boats had sunk the brave civilian fleet, resulting in countless deaths in the Channel, our memory of it would be far, far different to what it is now.If the Nazis had taken thousands of British troops hostage in those early days of WW2, to then torture and murder them, there'd be no-one crowing about Dunkirk now.The Brits were magnificent, to be sure. But they were also LUCKY.

Ditto, the American 'Berlin Airlift' in 1949.If the Soviets had blown every plane out of the sky (which they could have done) as the US sent in supplies to Germans stranded in West Berlin, we wouldn't be calling it a success today.We would remember it as a tragic failure.

In both cases, the British and Americans plans depended on the humanity of their enemies.The Germans had just steamrolled their way through Belgium and France. However the Luftwaffe and Wermacht had honor. The idea of butchering a defenseless & stranded enemy would have been considered dishonorable. At least, back then.

@Lisa22 @REX I'm a Gen Xer and I went to go see Darkest Hour and Dunkirk and I am one of those people who gets mad when people sneer at French surrender because the French while they fought badly, fought very hard and some did not surrender until out of gas and ammo. Likewise the "steamroller" German invasion actually left the German forces quite badly chewed up such that they needed to be reformed and largely reequipped which, apart from no ships, made Unternehmen Seelowe unworkable.

@REX So Rex - I just happen to be in the middle of Eric Larson’s “The Splendid and the Vile” about Churchill and Dunkirk and the Luftwaffe. I wanted to read about real war from the not too distant past and to understand how ordinary people responded to the challenges. So oh boy. Propaganda was huge.courtesy of Goebbels. Fear mongering. Inducing panic. But Churchill helped everybody feel they could triumph if they just gave it their all and sacrificed whatever they had to do.
