I love it when the corporate types accidentally say the quiet bit out loud. My company put out a video this morning explaining why it's important to participate in team building exercises. The gist was, "We want you to be happy because happy employees do better work." You know they don't really care about you beyond the service you provide them, but usually they're a little bit more subtle about the whole thing.

@mike Do you think an employer holding that opinion and saying it to the employee directly would be a bad thing? (I understand the message was not direct in this case). I think when the employer-employee relationship is understood by both parties as only a business arrangement, it simplifies things.

@mike unexpected salary raises boost happiness more than team building exercises 🤣

@mike I do think there's a place for loyalty in business, but the abuse really starts to happen when one party (I've seen it work in both directions) makes more out of the relationship than should be.This is just what I've seen in general. As with any kind of relationship, there's nuance and different situations.

@daremo I think that their position is understood, but it's more than a little aggravating when there's a constant "we're a family here" drum beat. It feels as if the corporation is trying to supplant my ACTUAL family (scheduling events on weekends and at 7am this damn morning), which makes it stand out glaringly when they let slip the fact that they only care about your happiness as it relates to your productivity. Not a very "family" attitude.

@mike I think what you're saying is close to what I'm getting at. The "we're a family" trope always sets off my bullshit detector. Most, possibly not all, employers are likely to always act in their best business interests, which imo precludes genuinely demonstrating that they prioritize the employees best interests. Those two things can't be true at the same time.

@daremo Yea, I just find it funny and at the same time annoying when they let the mask slip. It's like their opinion of you is so low that they can't even be bothered to maintain the charade.

@mike I remember an old french commercial with 3 boss asking what they're doing to make their employees happier. Two of them used the usual team building bullshit and the last one said "I gave them a good health insurance" (of course, it was an ad for it). Despite the ad aspect, this clip represented what I expect in a company. Instead of useless workshops and whatever, a good practical useful advantage. However, as a freelance I'm not annoyed by these things anymore.

@Wivik @mike I think what we are really seeing here is every type of company is trying to mirror what people believe is the perfect work environment in tech companies or any other "family" company. I think what we are failing to recognize is that a lot of these companies have not really been tested. I strongly suspect that if they fall on hard times, this "family dynamic" will quickly deteriorate as reality sets in and both parties realize that they are just another company.

@mike if we both benefit, I don't mind being open about it. Happy chickens lay more eggs, but only if their diet and conditions are good. Team building exercises do not produce more eggs, better working conditions do

@simon Yea, better working conditions (to me) is better pay, better benefits. Not getting together on my lunch hour to play board games with coworkers.@daremo

@mike @daremo The "family" analogy is a pre-covid thing to appeal to the younger generation who generally have moved to a new location (big city) and have nothing better to do than hang out at work. That works for twenty somethings, but then they will get a family and would rather spend time with their actual family. And it all falls apart.

@mike @simon @daremo Post Covid, our coworkers won't be our friends and "family". We will spend time getting work done rather than putting time in and spend more time with our real families and doing things that will make is happier than grinding hours at work. Don't get me wrong. Hard work is great, but office work doesn't have the same kind of benefit to your mind and body as manual labor. It might be the algorithm, but many of the places I go to read are expressing these ideas.
