Damn. Conversation over lunch has me considering founding a digital services co-op. I don't have time for that, guess it's time to recruit.

Okay, let's talk about the internet, and co-ops. Most IT and Operations work is push button, it requires minimal deep knowledge on a system, as long as that system is built on open parts and is well documented. A couple of Junior ops folks, and maybe one or two senior ops folks or mid-level SREs could easily leverage some open source tools to provide: - Social - Video Sharing - Email - File sharing and file storage - Chat - local message boards - Web hosting to a large community.

I do it now in my spare time for 5 or 6 folks without any real issues. Someone better than me or (someone worse than me but with more time) could scale that up to hundreds without breaking much of a sweat. I'm not suggesting that we try to compete with AWS or whatever, just that we provide an alternative to gmail, dropbox, youtube, and squarespace. With good backups, ethical and understandable terms, and low fees.

@ajroach42 I know several people who would likely be interested in participating in something like that.Personally I'm super interested in hearing about it, telling people about it, sharing what I know if applicable, and learning from folks' experiences setting it up, though I don't think I'd be able to quit my job for it currently.
