i know there are people who disagree with this, but i suspect they weren’t there in the early days: Reddit used to be better. it got worse as a broader audience joined. this always happens to all communities that take off. also, imgur used to have decent memes on it, but nowadays it’s mostly stuff that is neither funny nor clever. the site really jumped the shark when celebrities started having AMAs on there.

see, a good number of us were Slashdot refugees. we first left for Digg and later left for Reddit. i expect that most of us are no longer active users of the site. we got drowned out and left, much like Eternal September on Usenet.

so far, the closest i’ve come to a community where most members are intelligent and often funny people is the Fediverse.

@thor I don’t know about that last bit but reddit has become mass media for the masses and they sold out to advertisers a few years back.

@thor one real nice thing about federated networks is that they seem to prevent everything becoming a huge echo chamber. which reddit, hackernews, lobsters, etc. all have become. there is no constructive dissence, and god forbid you say something politically which isn't mainstream progressive narrative. the exchange we've had yesterday would have been outrageous there.

@thor most platforms sites and communities suffer from broadening their appeal - not because being mainstream is bad, it's that more people meanna bigger amount of toxic people. These are usually louder than the rest really tilting the entire picture. On top of that, moderation gets more difficult with more people, the same is true for promoting "quality" content.

@Primo in the prototypical case of this, Eternal September was named after a time of year when lots of college students would get online for the first time and make lots of noise because they didn’t know the culture and etiquette of Usenet. they would eventually settle down. but these new “college students” never settled down. they drowned out the existing people because there were millions of them, mostly getting online for the first time via AOL.

@Primo when your subculture is set apart from the culture of the mainstream, of course a big wave of mainstream users is going to be destructive to that.
