"Thousands of Afghans struggling to ensure the physical safety of their families after the Taliban took control of the country have an additional worry: that biometric databases and their own digital history can be used to track and target them."https://www.reuters.com/article/afghanistan-tech-conflict/afghans-scramble-to-delete-digital-history-evade-biometrics-idUSL8N2PO1FHNobody in #InfoSec or #DigitalHumanRights spaces is surprised by this. This was completely predictable.Another "this would *NEVER* happen" just happened.

@thegibson @rysiek I'm reminded of the story of the census officer in WWII France who, knowing that census data would be used to find and kill Jews, destroyed it before they could consolidate.

@seachaint We used to be told in school that the decentralization of governmental databases, registry offices, tax authorities, and the ban on a national citizen ID that could be used to link those databases in pre-unification West Germany was deliberate inefficiency in order to prevent easy access by the next malicious government. No idea if it was true. Not much left of that by now either, and everyone gets assigned tax ID at birth too.@TheGibson @rysiek

@rysiek Unfortunately one of the best real-world example to share from now one to demonstrate why the "I have nothing to hide" doesn't hold: Suddenly, litterally overnight, the digital data available about you becomes illegal. Legal yesterday, used to kill you the next day. At least here the twitter, facebook & co are not against Afghans and will allow them to hide data and live. But what happens when those companies bend to politics and are actively against you ?

@Rysiekúr Memesson @netskaven Something similar happened in Holland (I think to remember) in WWII: Every follower of a religion (or maybe only jews) registered their preference with the State. When nazis arrived all they had to do was to get those lists and go get the people at their the designated addresses.

This is a good moment to yet again recommend Maciej Cegłowski's talk "Haunted by Data":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAXLHM-1PskText and slides here:https://idlewords.com/talks/haunted_by_data.htmIf you're building a new online tool, if you're running a website with analytics enabled, if you're gathering any user data at all, please watch it and then watch it again.
