I discovered that my Remarkable2 is pretty useful for signing PDFs. Kinda obvious in retrospect.

@edsu The device looks ace. What's the deal with the Remarkable cloud? Is there a premium upgrade that's essentially necessary? What's the security with the service? Will it sync with any other cloud - like NextCloud for example? Is the laptop app UX as good as the tablet? Does the device have a built-in browser? Or any other apps.

@mike_hales the reMarkable Cloud is an optional way to backup your stuff, and to send things to your device if you don't want to talk directly to it. No premium upgrade needed.I don't use NextCloud (but I'd like to actually) so I don't have any experience syncing the remarkable with it. But I did a bit of searching around and see that some people are using rclone to do that?https://remarkablewiki.com/tips/rclone

@mike_hales I think there are people putting all kinds of apps on it, but for me that kind of misses the point.I wanted a device to read PDFs and EPUBs, and not be distracted by all the apps that want my attention. It's not an iPad, and doesn't want to be one ... it's something else. This is a subtlety that many of the reviews (like the one in Wired) seemed to just miss completely.

@edsu Thanks. That's what I thought. I'm not sure I can afford that amount for a device to write & read on, even if the paper effect is lovely.I write & draw & mark up pdfs on an iPad. Although stylus+screen is no competition, iPad serves also to write Markdown, read mail, check-out weblinks. So as a bundle of functions on a lightweight device, I don't feel I can afford to fire up another expensive device to duplicate some of these. Shame. For writing & drawing reMarkable looks excellent.

@mike_hales yeah, I use a laptop for all that -- I have zero interest in an iPad.

@edsu You wrote> an optional way to backup your stuff, and to send things to your device if you don't want to talk directly to itHow does reMarkable directly talk to devices? What kind of OS does the device itself run?

@mike_hales Linux (a custom distribution called Codex) https://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/Features/reMarkable-2 & you can ssh into it, scp, etc.

@edsu Hmmnn, sounds too tech for me. No Linux skills 🙄 and no desire to acquire them! Life's too short! The perils of being a committed 'user'.Does strike me that the reMarkable is another instance of a luxury device marketed at geeks and design wonks - as Apple has always been. Having made my commitment to Apple 30 years ago, for better or worse (OK, worse!) I'm stuck in that 'user' position for the rest of my days. No time to take on a sysadmin persona now, too many other fronts to work on.

@mike_hales I get it, believe me. The reMarkable is marketed at professionals who like to read articles/books and write with their hand -- probably a dying breed, but I hope not. Marketing aside, I thik you're right that the reM has been taken up by people who like to spend their time tinkering with tech. which is not everyone's cup of tea by any means -- especially for people who have other work to do.

@edsu I'm a person - a designer - who writes and draws by hand - that's the reason I bought an iPad years back - and had to wait quite a long time before it met those expectations at all well, with the stylus that Steve Jobs resisted (!) and the hires screen. It matters a lot to me, to be able to put hand-drawn media into digital space. So I hope, not dying breed 😉

@edsu If I were to make the investment again, now, I might just go for the reMarkable. Its paper-line touch and screen lightong would be great. Even so, I still might be swayed by the integration of apps across IOS and (my main platform) MacOS.

@edsu My main drawing/handwriting app in IOS has a MacOS stable-mate which means I can also edit using the Mac keyboard and tracjkpad - which is better for some things (like text content). It's a juggling act! Thanks for details of the sexy device. Part of me still is tempted 😞 Good job I can;t afford it.

@mike_hales it was a stretch for me too, and my first tablet -- so I guess I should be the last person in the world to have opinions about any of it :-)

@edsu @mike_hales This is the appeal for me - a distraction-free sketching device that feels like paper. I keep on talking myself out of it and then circling around it again. Currently my reason is 'why not just use paper notebook'. For a while I used to say 'why not just read paper books' but now you'd have to do a lot to convince me out of my ebook reader.

@edsu @mike_hales A Kobo Clara HD with koreader installed.Actually in a lot of ways it's koreader that one would have to convince me out of... it's really versatile and tweakable. So I'm hopeful that the remarkable system is hackable enough that something similar ends up on there too - sounds like it might well be.

@neil @edsu @mike_hales I have a Supernote A5X and *love* it. It's very similar to the reMarkable overall but does a couple things differently from what I've heard. Once I finish this upgrade/migration I'm doing right now, I plan to work on my blog post about it.This is very much a WIP but you can take a look at what I have so far if you want.https://wip.secluded.site/catchy-title-about-supernote-being-the-new-paper/(if anything I've said about the reMarkable is incorrect, please correct me )
