Since people don't have to face real hardship in the modern first world and communications technology enforces social connections at any given moment, people rarely undergo that process anymore; they never meet the conditions for it.

Maybe a lockdown? Nobody knows and it’s demolishing morale. Our new art teacher quit 3 days into the school year because the district administrators are like the blind leading the blind, and most teachers in our state are first timers who were thrust into school with a week of training at the beginning of August because everyone quit en masse in July as a statement. They have no idea what they’re doing. It’s madness. Meanwhile, with my dad’s myeloma, I am forced to look like the coof-freaks while I wear nitrile gloves and teach from behind my podium to avoid bringing home germs for him while he preps for stem cell replacement with zero immune system. In many ways all the Covid nonsense has been great timing for me to be able to do my job without being arsed to get “hands on” with students. So I’m hardly complaining. I run through the same powerpoints I did last year, radicalize kids, and collect a paycheck.
