My great-uncle Colonel Curtis Yarnell Kimball, US Army, was tasked with the EXACT SAME MISSION.The United States Military Mission with the Imperial Iranian Gendarmerie.Curtis served in Iran from 1950 to 1954.He was removed from Iran at the behest of of the State Department.Why?Because he said EVERYTHING that the writer of the Atlantic article said."THIS IS NUTS!!!" Curtis wrote on one page of his Field Notes.

What happened in Afghanistan is nothing new.But the US is a work in progress. We'll eventually get it right.Curtis did not serve in vain. Neither did our troops in Afghanistan. They prevented WORSE things from happening.And now, with the advent of the Third Revolution in Military Affairs, we're finally in a place to stop repeating the failures of the past.We must never invade and occupy a country again.All wars must be fought clandestinely.

Fifteen (15) Emiratis fought 40,000 Houthis in Little Aden and Crater in 2015.The battle went on for a full month.The Emiratis sent 15 men because those were all who were needed.They commanded the firepower of an entire division.It isn't 2001 anymore.Be thankful that you're not in the shoes of the Taliban and their allies.END

@ThomasWic I'm sure that the armed forces of Saudi and UAE are capable. But aren't you playing them up a little bit too much? They're having enough trouble with the Houthis in Yemen. I don't know how they could take on the Taliban when they already have enough on their plate.

@ThomasWic Wouldn't India be a better candidate to pick up the mess? It's right in their neighborhood. They've had to deal with the Pakis ever since 1948.The other big issue is we've shown that we're not serious about the issues we face. Any perusal in social media on this Afghan mess will provide proof of that.
