Every computer hardware or electronic gadget purchase feels like a process of endless research.

"What graphics card should I get? How will it be bottlenecked by a given CPU? What monitor should I get with that? Will I need to use HDMI or DisplayPort? Should I go for IPS or TN? What refresh rate is optimal? Should I use FreeSync or G-Sync?"It just goes on and on and on.

@sean@social.deadsuperhero.com whenever i come across “endless research” i take the shortcut and conclude “it’s all exactly the same garbage”

@sean i feel lucky in browsing the used market in at least there's a narrowing of choice, a take it or leave it kind of thing, and there's less investment time or otherwise when it eventually breaks.

@cell yeah, that's a fair point, and not a bad mindset at all.

@sean the shortcut, of course, is asking a few knowledgeable, passionate people. It seems like the internet - or even Mastodon - should help make this easier. But somehow finding the right person to ask doesn’t feel so much easier.

@schmudde generally, I agree. In my case, I just ended up watching a bunch of basic explainer videos and then spent hours comparing listings. But, it's not always that easy. Looking into video cameras, for example, just feels like a lot of confusion and disappointment.

@sean I’ve definitely been down that rabbit hole. I’m very happy that so many cyclists feel compelled to make videos on how to fix your bike. And praise the phone geeks who want to detail every pro and con of countless black glass pocket slabs.

@sean But is it FUN endless research?

@flavigula somewhat! I did end up learning a fair bit about screen display technology, refresh rates, CPU / GPU bottlenecking, DisplayPort in graphics cards, caveats with high-capacity RAM chips, and a comparison of how various chipsets / open source drivers work with Linux. It's not necessarily immediately applicable knowledge, but it did help me understand some of the directions PC hardware has taken since the last time I built a PC (2012).

@sean Any new knowledge, even if not ever applicable, is positive in my view. Though I'm a fairly adept programmer in many languages, I must say that I at times stumble with hardware. Though probably sitting down and learning to build a PC from scratch might help that.
