@mike @PINE64 heck yeah. The #Pinebox and make it look like an old school boom box but smaller.

@mike @PINE64 maybe you could cobble something together with a RockPro64 and some of the case accessories, and plug a mic/speaker into it. :D

@Ateriath Probably could, but @PINE64 could do a much better job of it!

@hund Generic term for a device like the Amazon Echo or the Google Assistant devices. The Mycroft Mark I is a smart speaker.@PINE64

@mike @PINE64 Okay. :) What do people use it for? I've heard a lot of about them, but they're called assistants here.

@hund Loads of things. They interface with smart stuff in your house, like thermostats and lights so you can control those with a voice command. General stuff like asking stupid questions, like what time it is or how the weather is, or how many kilometers makes up a mile, or what time is it in another location. Of course Mycroft is open source, so anything you can code you can do. The major trick is being able to ask it questions in plain language, and get answers back.@PINE64

@mike @PINE64 I’m sure they could. What they manage to cobble together from commodity parts, at great prices, with not-bad-at-all finish is impressive. If they put out a smart speaker, it would probably be the only one I’d consider buying.

@mike @PINE64 The issue is that unless you want to use Mycroft's AI, the software effort is immense. You need a speech-to-text engine, an natural-language intent parser and execution engine (or intent shell, as I like to call it), a speech synthesizer, and a bunch of recognized commands for the intent shell. It's certainly possible. If they use a model with a NPU, it could probably be used for the voice I/O with e.g. a tacotron implementation, and the rest isn't *too* much for the community...

@pixelherodev Well, that's kinda the thing with @PINE64. They provide the hardware. The community provides the software. The same is true with the #Pinephone, #Pinetab, and #Pinetime. Even the #PinebookPro.

@mike @PINE64 I'm aware :)Usually, though, most of the software in question already exists, and just needs to be retargeted. Moreover, as this is something which really *could* benefit from a NPU, for instance, the hardware needs to be designed with the software in mind.

@pixelherodev Isn't the same true of #Mycroft? Mycroft is there, and exists in the real world. It's biggest problem is that it's smart speaker software without a smart speaker to run on. #MycroftAI has been working on getting their hardware released for over 4 years now. In that time, Mycroft has only run on the aging Mark I devices, cobbled together Picrofts, and PCs which it's not designed to run on efficiently. An NPU may be helpful, but Mycroft's own hardware is simply a Pi 4.@PINE64

@mikeThis would allow both companies to focus on what they do best. Pine has demonstrated, time and again, that they can get an affordable product to market. By succeeding at this they have a crowd of wide-eyed believers who will jump on and support their products. This would become shot in the arm for Mycroft. I think they need it.@pixelherodev @PINE64

@Tay0 I agree. I love #Mycroft, but they've been flailing about the last couple years trying to do what Pine64 does on a regular basis. @PINE64 stepping in with a hardware option would be a huge boon to the community and put focus back on a product that I think has not gotten the attention it deserves. Plus, I think Pine64 could sell some hardware.@pixelherodev

@mike @Tay0 @PINE64 I mean, yeah; if the idea was "better mycroft speaker," then absolutely I'd love for Pine to do that.Personally, I dislike mycroft's architecture (and poor offline capabilities and heavy dependence on external services as a result of the need for HUNDREDS OF GIGABYTES OF TRAINING DATA), but hardware designed to fit mycroft would still be adaptable to alternate software *anyways* so it would absolutely be a huge improvement regardless.

@pixelherodev At this point, any smart speaker #Mycroft runs on would be a "better Mycroft speaker", but there's nothing about an SBC with a decent mic and speaker setup that is specific to Mycroft. With @PINE64 at the helm, I would expect several options to work. There are several things about Mycroft's architecture I'm not a fan of, but in my opinion it's got more potential to be what I want in a smart speaker than any other option I've seen so far. @Tay0
