(1) On May 8th, 1979, I walked out of the Naval Air Base at Ezeiza, near Buenos Aires, after spending several months there as a prisoner.I had been assigned to the security detail in that Base in early 1978, after completing basic training in the Marine Corps, and a brief stint at the 3rd Marine Battallion, Co. I, in the city of La Plata.I was a platoon leader and a sniper.Soon after arriving at BAE, I was transferred from the security detail to the counterintelligence unit.

(2) It appears someone in the family had tried to make it easier for me, but it backfired miserably.There was a small fleet of rather ancient aircraft at the base.Three DC-3s (C-47) and 2 DC4s among them, and a couple of newer Focker 28.The DC-3s were constantly in use.While at the security detail I had to do guard duty and had seen the activity increase at night.

(3) One day, already reassigned to the intelligence unit, I found out the details as I was posted to one of the flights.It was in mid-1978, as the Soccer World Cup was being played just a few miles away.The flight plan was Ezeiza-Punta Indio-Ezeiza.Punta Indio was a chickenshit town on a point at the mouth of the River Plate, without much in it, and I had no idea what we were going to do there.Maybe the whole thing was a training exercise.It was not.

(5) They were led into the plane and sat, backs against the fuselage, on the sides.I was carrying a FAL and was made to "cover" the loading operation and then take my place by the aft door.The DC-3 never landed in Punta Indio.About 20 minutes into the flight, my CO opened the aft door, and instructed me to assist him in throwing our passengers into the river, about 30 miles from shore, where the brown river empties into the South Atlantic. Very easy to recognize...

(6) I refused.In my education in a family with a number of high ranking naval officers, the concept of due obedience did not extend to illegal orders, much less committing murder.In the scuffle that ensued, I shot my CO, hitting him in the arm, and was instantly under a pile of rabid non-commissioned officers that beat me nearly unconscious.The cargo was disposed of, and I was brought back to Ezeiza and then transported to the ESMA.

(10) Weeks later, unable to walk, I was carried to a truck and taken back to Ezeiza, but first I was shown a mass grave in an area were they were building a sports complex by the river.The message was clear and needed no explanation.Many were later found, but I wonder if this one is still there under the soccer field.Back then, it was not bones.

(11) Before I made it to Ezeiza, though, they took me back to the BIM 3 in La Plata, to a hole under the "Plaza de Armas" where there were small holding cells. The stench was slightly better than ESMA, and there were no constant screams to keep you awake.Today I understand the buildings are part of the University of La Plata, back then it was a concentration camp with a Marines base on top.

@DebradelaiUK TV show Top Gear did a special down there; they ended with a bit of a political scuffle. What amazing mountains before that though. I hadn't known much of their politics before that and barely know now. I hadn't known of the beauty of those mountains before that either. I heard it during times when my life was thick with those I fear were some type of (knowing or not) operatives in persuading our country's people to think how others wanted us to think. @Debradelai Saul, I am crying for you, even though you were strong, but also for my dad who suffered greatly in China and North Vietnam and my dear friend who's dad workedfo the government of Columbia and escaped at night from death squads and got to America. I have more stories but time in short. You are brave and we are grateful you survived to tell us tales. So many have NO clue what goes on in the world and whine when their phone charge is low. We know. We know the truth of how lucky we are.

@Debradelai Incredible that you made it out alive from that horror. Much respect, sir. I just returned this week from Buenos-Aires. A private tour guide led me through the history of that heinous era. We visited MemoryPark along the river, whose walls honor the names of all the missing, many having been thrown in the river on the flights of death, or taken to torture houses and later burned.
