I have brought the PineTime back into normal reality, by manually typing hex numbers into bluetoothctl.

I will probably write a Python script or something to do this without all the typing, or maybe I'll find one somewhere.

So yes, two days after I got it, my watch now tells the correct time. At least until it hard resets, or some civil time thing happens.

The worst part about setting the time through bluetoothctl is probably that you have to convert decimal to hex under time pressure.

@alexbuzzbee questions:1. Is there a way for it to connect to the internet and connect to a NTP server?and2. Is there an internal battery for time or is there a way to make space for one?

@0PT41N1. I believe its only data connection (unless you crack the case and get at the debug pins) is Bluetooth Low Energy. The intended design is for a smartphone to be in touch with it at all times to send it occasional time corrections, notifications, etc.2. It's a portable electronic device; it has a multi-day rechargeable battery as its primary power source.

@alexbuzzbee hmm... then power is no problem. the problem is getting the information from a remote location such as a third party device like smartphones or servers.

@0PT41N BLE is enough to get "the time is X" messages from a smartphone, but it does require specialized software on the phone which has to be configured to send those messages to that specific watch.

@alexbuzzbee there are micro cheap chipsets like the TMicro32 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32869180373.html. It supports BT and WIFI. An opensource watch has this.https://open-smartwatch.github.io/

@0PT41N Part of the reason for relying so heavily on a controller device is that the PineTime's hardware is pretty anemic. Not that a watch needs to be powerful, but talking NTP, connecting to the Internet, and handling the madness that is timezones would require a lot of power that really isn't worth it. Since by design the thing is meant to be under the command of a smartphone or similar device anyway, it makes more sense to offload the hard parts since it's almost certainly doing them anyway.

@0PT41N Full Bluetooth and Wi-Fi need a lot more power. Saving power is the name of the game on a device that needs to fit comfortably on your wrist and be usable for several days.

@alexbuzzbee Yeah having days long of battery power is a great thing. damn, wish we could have convenience (the good kind) and compact at the same time guess it one or the other. :blobfoxsad:

@alexbuzzbee @0PT41N My watch has this nice wheel that I can turn, and then the time adjusts ;) :p

@sotolf @0PT41N Yeah if I just wanted a watch I'd have bought a watch. Smartwatches are not automatically better. But I do think it'll be handy to have the notification functionality, step counting, etc.

@alexbuzzbee @0PT41N And here I'm working at getting my notifications down to as few as I'm able to :p, my phone already counts steps, and it's always in my pocket anyway.

@sotolf @0PT41N The watch is a bit more accurate in counting steps, I think because a phone is somewhat insulated by the fabric of the pocket, and anyway I do not-so-infrequently leave it on a table or something.Currently whenever I get a notification I'm digging my phone out of my pocket, which wastes time when the notification is something I don't actually need to do anything about. Plus sometimes I miss text messages and things and the watch would make that harder to do.

@alexbuzzbee @0PT41N I don't think a more accurate step count bring me much, I'm looking at number of 5000 steps I'm taking anyway, as usually I try to get over 10 000 and then often on weekend days 20 -25 000.Also I try to have as few notifications as possible, I get just as distracted if I look something up on my hand as if I would on my phone, I think the solution to that is to just have less notifications so you don't get desensitised to it.
