Bought an eSim for the trip to the USA. For some reason, Google has decided that this particular data connection is in Poland and insist on presenting me all information in Polish. Including local searches for cinemas, restaurants, and so on and so forth.I suspect that most of Google is just a bunch of incredibly stupid shell scripts. If one script says: "that eSim is Polish" then everything has to be in Polish.StartPage, Osmand+, Tor and others are better solutions every day.

@heurekus Purchased through "Airalo" (an esim company based in Singapore), the esim name is "USA Roam" recognized by my phone as "Roamability", and it uses the AT&T network.Yes, that does not make any sense.Especially since all the device I have run an English OS.

Strangely related: the tyranny of captcha. If a script or an algorithm decides you represent a risk (based on... what, exactly?) you will have to help the Googleplex. The results are depressing:https://clivethompson.medium.com/why-captcha-pictures-are-so-unbearably-depressing-20679b8cf84a

@ParadeGrotesque I suspect they geolocate based off IP address.I live in USA, and even though Google has my home address on file, they show me local ads for hundreds or even a thousand miles away. It seems to change all the time. I was getting ads for Arizona, among other places, and I live in Idaho. It probably only works properly in southern California and New York City, as those are the only places they test.

@sowth That is what I suspect as well. It's possible the esim provider acquired a block of IP address that previously belonged to a Polish ISP or company and that the transfer was never properly done.Which begs the question: if mighty Google can't do groceries properly, who can?Related business model: acquire IP blocks from different parts of the world and use them to confuse geo tracking.

@ParadeGrotesque They are also culturally biased toward North-American culture. Why should we recognize for étaxis" the yellow cars with some strange writing on it, if we are not North-American culture aware ?

@ParadeGrotesque @sowth ipv4 is so fragmented that i guess it's hard to properly keep track. which is good, geolocation has to die, it's only useful for things which are bad for the user.

@R1Rail @ParadeGrotesque Even more strange is the "fire hydrant". This is something that literally doesn't exist in most countries.
