It bothers me when people say "software isn't Free unless it's usable, intuitive, and works for me". Software can be free but not useful. Purity of an ideological standard provides a reference for setting these principles selectively as they make sense in a "real world" context. Not every software program is going to be perfect. Writing software is hard. Having something shitty and Free is valuable in its own right, just maybe not valuable to you personally

Just thinking about people getting upset about fully Free operating system variants not booting because of proprietary driver blobs, and all I can say is:1) There are many, many operating systems that support non-Free drivers on an otherwise Free system. You just need to pick a different one.2) The requirement of non-Free blobs is not anyone's fault except the hardware manufacturer.3) Many computers boot these operating systems. Most AMD desktops with Ethernet do

@MadestMadness as far as I'm concerned, free software is any software with open source licensing. I don't think many people have coherent ideas about copyright law and free software. "If you don't like it, contribute, fork, or write your own" is my statement

@avery For me I draw the line at adherence to the four freedoms. In line with that, there is Non-Free source-available software that I consistently use and recommend 🙂

With all this being said, I'd actually like to take a moment to stress the importance of distros like Linux Mint that do a good job of prioritizing a good user experience over ideological purity.Distros like Linux Mint make the reality of partial software freedom accessible to a much larger swathe of people, and it's a very important project as a result 😊

@MadestMadness idk much about foss or software in general but a busted chair missing a leg on the side of the road is still free and can very much be turned into a new and functioning chair or, at worst, firewood
