privacy-wise, I'd say duckduckgo, searx, and maybe...startpage? Other input is welcome!

@calculsoberic I've been using DuckDuckGo all the time, and don't have any issues with it

@t12 that's what I do most of the time! I like searx because you can code it and make your own instance.

@t12 https://searx.space/ - these are all the public instances (like the fediverse, there are instances.) it's open source, so essentially you could modify the code and say hey, this is t12.searx.de or whatever

@calculsoberic #DuckDuckGo would be a bad choice (see http://techrights.org/2021/03/15/duckduckgo-in-2021/) For advanced users, the most privacy-respecting search engine in the world is sercxi.eu.org. #searx can't be suggested because it's software for which there are many instances, some of which are in #Cloudflare

@resist1984 oh I didn't realize that! I had considered that there were probably issues with them and I didn't know them all offhand. thank you.

@calculsoberic a specific searx instance that I'd recommend is metasearch.nl.

@resist1984 thank you again! oh I have an account on your instance but haven't been on there for a bit. it was my introduction to the fediverse!

@calculsoberic sercxi.eu.org is the best because privacy-abusing #Cloudflare sites are filtered out and folded at the bottom (you can see them if you click the cloud at the bottom of the results). Only non-Cloudflare sites are shown in the unfolded results. There is also a strikethrough over links of other tor-hostile sites, so you know in advance if a site will give Tor users problems.

@calculsoberic and if a site gives problems, you can click the favicon of the site in the results listing and it will automatically take you to the archive.org mirror of the site.
