This is because the meanings of different words are constantly changing in English and in other vernacular languages. But in Latin, things are constant. This makes it really useful because we do not have to update it all of the time, and things are very clear and specific. At the Vatican 2 council they allowed for a new mass in vernacular. This mass has only existed for about 50 years, and already you have a lot of people saying it is outdated and must be updated. But the Latin mass is the same as it has been for over 1000 years.It is also good because it is universal. I could attend a Latin mass anywhere on earth and it would be the same.It is also untrue that most people did not understand anything that was happening at the mass. Almost everything in the mass is exactly the same each time, and people would go at least weekly from the time they are born until the time they died. Some people would attend daily mass as well. I have only been attending the Latin mass for less than a year, and I understand things pretty well. Another thing that I think a lot of people do not realize, is that prior to the invention of the printing press, it really was not feasible to have every book translated into every vernacular language. Anyone who knew how to read back then knew how to read in Latin, so it was not worth the effort. Today we do the homily and the readings in vernacular, which I think makes sense, but I'm not sure when that change occurred. Thank you friend.

But some did it on purpose to gain power, some did it on purpose because they were exceptional individuals that didn't need it, and felt they'd be better off without. The problem with the latter is that exceptional people should never take themselves as a metric when designing societies or legal codes, the average joe can't handle the freedoms and responsibilities that results in.
