@vaartis I don't need it for anything at the moment right now, except some multiplayer games. Means I can massively shrink its space on my drives. :)

@siina nice nice..i wonder what else filesystem is there for desktop that's stable enough, except ext4. there's zfs which is really not needed for desktop, there's btrfs which is still not really as stable and supposedly still corrupts data, and i don't know what else people put rootfs on ...

@vaartis I might just stick to ext4. I don't have a whole lot of need for zfs poops, though snapshotting would be nice. I'm going to set up gpu passthrough for everything else, so I don't have to freaking dual boot again.

@Polychrome I'm not sure. I know it's a pain in the tits for rootfs.

@siina @Polychrome i mean, if you use the NEW gentoo-kernel ebuild (which builds a pre-configured kernel for you) and just emerge zfs, it should put it into the initramfs automatically and then you just need to put it into fstab correctly

@vaartis @Polychrome Does it detect hardware and build for that or is it like when they were suggesting people use the debian kernel for a "works for everyone" kernel?I would probably still use my own existing kernel config since it has exactly what I need in it and not much more.

@siina @Polychrome it's just everything-in-one kernel plus dracut for out-of-tree modules like zfs. I decided to use it because i could not for the life of me make my amd card work and i would rather not bother with configuring the kernel to work well for the virtual machine passthrough. I only update the kernel maybe once a month or so anyway

@vaartis @siina I would disagree that ZFS isn't needed for a desktop. ZFS is needed *more* for desktops because desktop drives are awful lying pieces of shit and you need ZFS to protect you from their awful behavior. Enterprise drives aren't much better, of course, but desktop drives are worse. Try it, if you can spare the memory for it.
