I think matrix may have a better theoretical foundation to build things on than xmpp, but the matrix.org people are literal tranny jannies who make things purposefully more difficult to sell their proprietary integration manager (which is cringe). The core dev team has like, 2 w*men, an autist who's github profile is all minecraft junk, and a really ugly guy who probably only drinks soylent unironically. Synapse is unusable, so we've had to use a modified conduit, and element is so buggy it gives me peepeepoopoo brain. The spec itself is bloated, and you could probably improve it immediately by just deleting half of it at random.I think matrix can one day be something worth using but someone needs to do something about the tranitor janitors running the show before it is too late. We will have to force ourselves to answer the Janitor Question, or the JQ as I like to call it.

@luke I've been using matrix with my friens for over a year now, but the resource utilization of Matrix Synapse is awful. Hopefully Dendrite (written in Go) will fix Matrix's efficiency problems (apparently a dev build was able to join 6.5k rooms and only use around 1.5gb of RAM), assuming they don't soy the implementation. I'm going set up an XMPP server later today and see how it goes.

@mandraker @luke When I tried it it didn't have video and voice call by default. I had to add a Jitsi Meet instance and it's not a straightforward process for normies when they want to make a voice call.

I gave XMPP a try with an account on this server https://niel.site with Conversations from F-droid on mobile and Gajim with omemo encryption on Linux and everything works perfectly. I also have a Matrix account on https://tchncs.de/matrix and the functionality is hit and miss and the notifications never work properly on Android for me. When my normie brother saw he can't call me on Matrix he uninstalled the app. We use XMPP ever since and it's as reliable as Signal.

There is however a config file that gives the option to allow or disallow user registration within the Metronome (xmpp) files on the server.

@tio @futureisfoss @lps I don't know which XMPP server implementation @yunohost uses but I'm familiar with ejabberd and the process is pretty simple. I just have the HTTP module listening on port 5443 on all interfaces and I've told ejabberd to let the register_web module handle any requests on the root / path. This allows people to register from xmpp.nixnet.services directly without having to append /register/ or something. Caddy is in front of ejabberd proxying the port and handling TLS so TLS is disabled here.

@billiam @luke @mandraker All that’s there is your JID. No IPs, etc. So, if you don’t use your real info, there’s no way to know who the person behind the JID really is. I believe they’re working on improving OMEMO to encrypt the whole stanza. I’d have to look at the XEP to find out, though.

The hardest part is all of the DNS entries needed (each component uses its own subdomain), but a nameserver that allows proper wildcard entries makes that somewhat easier. Client-side, Gajim is becoming a single-window application more in line with Slack, Mattermost, Element, etc. So, the clients are coming along. OMEMO works fairly well (still some issues with iOS, due to the way it tombstones apps and cuts off network access), MUC has had many improvements over the years (MAM, PEP, PubSub, Offline spool, etc), and MIX might eventually be finished before we are all dead or too old to care.If anyone would like a copy of our ejabberd.yml to help them set up a server, I can be reached at xmpp:thomas@nobodyhasthe.biz

@Mystik Looks unironically hype. Has everything out of the box, even voice calls, and uploading huge filesizes. Doesn't need a server to constantly run on the background, as it is P2P. I wish I had more time to see how it connects with the master/header server.
