There was still certainly a frontier and an arid landscape, and odds are it was relatively undergoverned in relation to the admitted states of the Union. There were Indian wars and there was a cattle driving culture. There probably weren't maverick gunslinging badasses all over the place, but I don't know if anyone really thinks that was the case (maybe boomers).
