       @radonhawk to be fair it /is/ consistent as long as the bus doesn't change and isn't dependent on stuff like driver load order

       @chjara I just renamed enp0s31f6 to eth0. And wlp5s0f3u2 to wlan0. Things can be simple.

       @radonhawk it works if you only have 1 interface, but gets messy if you have many. for another example, look at hard disk names in linux. if you plug multiple external drives in, which is sdb, which is sdc, how the hell are you supposed to know

       @chjara @radonhawk with udev rules you can rename specific ethernet modules. and keep cryptic names for the remainder

       @chjara @kht_kt @radonhawk actually that's not super reliable either, adding pcie cards can mess things up (I blame bad firmware though, thanks for nothing asus)

       @KayFaraday @radonhawk @EnjuAihara @laggard I've never found a use for it. I'd rather type eth0 than enp2s1 or whatever.

       @EnjuAihara @KayFaraday @laggard @radonhawk I didn't just type random nonsense here by the way. This is a real interface name for a USB built-in 3G modem.

       @KayFaraday @radonhawk @laggard @AbNormal @EnjuAihara Correct. I'd wager the old names are more convenient for 99.99% of people, who don't have to worry about interface names changing because they very rarely if ever change their interfaces.

       @KayFaraday @radonhawk @laggard @AbNormal @EnjuAihara I'd wager they'd still prefer typing wlan1 to wwp0s29u1u4i6

       @KayFaraday @radonhawk @laggard @AbNormal @EnjuAihara Not sure why. I think typing wlan1 is more reasonable than typing wwp0s29u1u4i6, unless you're part of the very very small group of people who handles many network interfaces and need them to have the same name every time.
