does ritalin actually help those with ADHD?completely anecdotal, but the stimulants i've tried have never necessarily improved focus, they've only made me more hyper. incidentally, from what i observed in other students: the ones who were prescribed it for their ADHD / misbehavior would only become more hyperactive, not necessarily more focused.. while the students who were more better performing but took the drug as an enhancement (e.g. to cram for exams) would benefit from the drug. so really it seems to be more of a question about how well disciplined you are. just curious right now because i know a younger guy who's considering starting ritalin, as he's failing his current semester of school.

@amnesiac Study at the library or at a location free of distractions. Don't bring a laptop, print everything out if you need to and just work from paper. Don't even bring your phone for the first few weeks. Literally just force yourself into a situation where the only activity available is studying. Over time, if you do this for long enough you can start dealing with distractions better. I went from being a C student to high A by doing this.

@amnesiac Best alternative, if you have the space, is to setup a spot in the house just dedicated to studying & work. As far as meds, I've never had anything but horrible experiences but that's partly just my own reaction to it. You can give me the lowest dose possible for any stimulant and I won't sleep for days. I can't even drink more than one coffee a day without becoming an insomniac.

@amnesiac there are 2 components to adhd. emotional control and executive functionritalin helps with executive function not emotional controlatomoxetibe helps with emotional controlin my opinion taking one without the other is a fools errand both are needed for regular or superhuman functioning.

@trips @amnesiac While you're at the study nook, I'd recommend setting your phone to airplane mode and turning off wifi. Fewer distractions from notifications, etc. Music that helps you concentrate is okay.
