Found this chunky 2010-made boi eating dust on the curb while #dumpsterdiving. What distro should I install on it to make it useful again? It's got a (gasp!) single-core Celeron and 4GB RAM#askfedi

@kzimmermannGreat find! Something minimal like Bunsenlabs, Alpine or the like.

@kzimmermann Debian or Devuan. It may also a great opportunity to tinker with the BSD family. I particularly love OpenBSD, although FreeBSD seems to be more popular

@kzimmermannOr go barebones Debian, Arch or Ubuntu and then no DE. Just use Openbox or Fluxbox.

@kzimmermann my personal favourite is PeppermintOS on older systems. Its somewhat outdated though because unfortunately the founder of the project died.

@werwolf @kzimmermann I build my source packages to be devuan compatible, which works fine on devuan, debian, and even ubuntu. If I were deploying devices I needed to actually work reliably in the field, I would not use systemd. If not for things like Devuan and Alpine (and gentoo and void) I might well have abandoned linux for BSD entirely.

@kzimmermann I've got two laptops of similar vintage; Intel T7200, 2G RAM. I'm comfortably running #Devuan/#XFCE on each, and can even run a VM under #qemu/#kvm with up to 1024M.

@kzimmermann Debian/Devuan, Void, Alpine, Arch/Artix or any BSD, if you wanna tinker; antiX if you don't. ;)

@kzimmermann Mint with xfce or MATE would be a good choice, but it should reasonably support anything with a light enough desktop environment.

@person any! I'm literally just happy that I got hold of additional metal to experiment on, and I'm looking for some creativity. Geeky works too since I have no risk here

@xrasl i wonder how Puppy fares as a frugal install rather than a live medium (which is how I always used it)? I always felt its package manager was a little clonky to upgrade stuff
