I got my drivers licences for VERY LITTLE money! Just €995 total including theory and one practical exam!Most people pay over €1000+ for a licence here thats quite normal

When I hear this guy talking about driving in the US for example I just get scared to drive there..I mean, it's kinda organized here on the road but I still don't like it.. Imagine if people just do something lol! And what's this with kids getting to learn driving from their parents? Wtf?..

@ranx Haha i bet! :blobcatgiggle: Older people from the NL told me that in the past they could just fly to one one of "our islands" on the US side (ABC islands) that are still part of the Netherlands. When you drive up and down a road there you got a licence haha! But it was legit!

@stux @copyme the average cost to learn to drive is about the same across Northern Europe, and the standard of testing near identical (other than UK driving on the other side of the road!). In USA there is no "USA driving licence"; every state has its own traffic laws and regulations, some are more robust than others and in car dependent rural areas its easy to get a licence and there are no roadworthiness tests for vehicles either!

@stux It can be scary driving in the US. Especially in the winter. My kids all went to Driver's Ed that I had to pay for. I just took mine out to practice.

@stux why would you need more than 65 lessons to learn to drive? This isn't like riding a bike or a horse, where you have to be coordinated. What are they learning? Are they in a really crowded city? (I passed my driver's exam in a small town where no one was on the road, which made it much easier. But I was terrified of the California freeways for a long time, with six lanes of traffic in each direction zipping along like an experiment in Brownian motion just waiting to happen...)

@stux Wow, that's a huge amount of money. It cost me $15 to get my learner permit. Took my test 2 weeks later and paid $10 for my license. We don't have to pay for taking the road test here, it's all included. (might be a tiny bit more now, got my license 45 years ago!)

@stux I've had some fun with my license renewal photos over the years. Since I was first licensed at 15 years old, I have worn the exact same Hawaiian print shirt. Someone finally noticed it when I was in my 40's and again in my 60's. Lady had a good laugh over it 😁

@stux UK wasn't always as strict as this - nor were the cops as well trained, until mid-late 90s they often took excessive risks in pursuits and both officers and civilians got injured, and insurance didn't have real time updating. Those who modify cars aren't so happy as people used to get away with undeclared mods but nowadays they will be taken off the road very quickly...@copyme

@copyme back in the day there were some (now outdated) stereotypes about standards of traffic safety in "Northern Europe" and "Southern Europe", but I think everywhere is trying to work towards same standards. I did look at modern FR traffic laws (as I was curious about what you had to do if you drive to France) and they also equally strict (or stricter than some other countries!)@stux

@stux Good luck with that. Basically there's token bike lanes in cities and pretty much none outside of them. It's 17 miles to the closest one for me, and even then cars still drive between the posts to park in them!@Lowell
